x1k (first M8 vocal test)

By Elmo on January 11, 2026 11:52 pm

First song I started when I received the M8 - wanted to test the inbuilt mic for vocals but ended up adding a fair amount of distortion anyway. Finally got round to completing it this week. Not sure where the lyric came from, but I think it's about endless tweaking and indecision - something I'm having to work against to get these WB tracks in!

Edits work really well, have to say.

I like the idea that voice is just an instrument, and I think this shows it really well
they're doing such amazing work in the layers

Oh I really like this! That vocal part is really captivating the way you chopped it. And the harmony part is sweet too! Really nice work!

Very moody, it draws you in. Great use of the vocals

Hell yeah
Sweet vocal chop

Vocals sounds great.

Nice buildup. I like the progression and synth work. Super mood.

to deal with mic distortion on the M8 internal mic,

1) use some kind of pop screen. I use a pop screen but pantyhose ant acoustically transparent material should work. something soft what itself doesn't rattle.  alternatively i find tilting the m8 sligthly off angle so the mic is pointed down and away from the air coming out of my mouth helps reduce rumble on the mic.

2) If you're using headphones while recording, there is a good chance to transmit a handling noise or vibration down the cable to the M8. i use an extender to give me a bit more length to work with to keep the cable out of the way.

3) if you're in a noisy environment and have unwanted sounds, put the M8 in drive mode, and load the samples up in an editor and repair. I use Waves Clarity Vx. It's pretty cheap ($30-$50CAD), and can take a noisy vocal with lots of background and make it dead silent.

the tracks is great. feels re-humanizing. heart
