Ribbon and virtual synth

By djippy on January 4, 2022 1:45 am

It started with the purchase of a cheap ribbon microphone, wanted to test some 1 mic drum recording, then, wanted to check how it work on my cheap acoustic guitar...

Put some reverb and delay on both tracks, shitload of compression especially on drums, then did want to add a track of synth to make it more interesting.

I am very happy about how my drums sound, it is a little noisy as my room is not optimal and I think this mic is probably a little noisy as well.

See you next week!

Great intro to the year - this track with its buildup feels like an opening to an album. The drums sound good - they have the great mix of organic/realism (because I guess they are real) but none of the cheap sound - this brings a lot of life. Love it. Looking forward to more of your tracks this year!

Good to see you back again! Nice track, especially the string part towards the end. Good luck this year!

The drums sound great and honestly are more clear than I thought a ribbon mic would do. How did you set it up? The punchy-ness and snap of the snare is great. Cymbals aren't too overwhelming either.

No complains about the recording. I wonder about the position of the mic. It sounds like an overhead, but with a good punch. I like the synth too. Good job. Keep on rocking.

Indeed, those are my acoustic drums in my garage... Content de te voir a nouveau aussi, a la fin de 2020 j'étais définitivement pas sur de revenir, mais là ca me tente. smile .

Thanks! Very happy that you'll post your beautiful pianos as well. Not sure which direction I'll take this year, if I want to explore synths or go more acoustic, do more signer songwriter stuff or ambiance. I think it will be fun anyways!

Hello again guys!

About mic and placement, this is an apex 250 that I paid 100 CAD used, it is placed at about my shoulder hight behind me and the kit, pointing to the snare-kick. It is not too far back, maybe 1 meter (3 feet).

It goes into a good preamp (focusrite isa one), I don't remember which impedance I did set it to but did select one that did feel a little brighter.

Then I slapped izotope neutron element (cheap one) on the track, sent that to a plate reverb and just a tiny bit to the same big delay that I have on the acoustic guitar (to add some stereo on drums).

This is still kind of a sketch, but I like how the track feel so I wish you all a great year 2022!

the ribbon sound gives me impression of a close-up to the sound sources

Man I'm a sucker for gritty drums

Great to see you back here!  I think the drums sounds good.  I just love the sound of "real" drums, and I wish I could use them more in my own stuff.  I hear you on the sub-optimal room though.  I learned a lot this past year about how "not perfect" my recording space is.  But we've got to work with what we've got and I think you're getting a cool sound.

the drums sound good, but the best thing is that you are playing them dynamically.  my problem is that i smash everything, and I can hear you hitting different things with varying power.

i bought some sound absorption panels and they were life changing!

welcome back buddy! smile

Welcome back dude, happy new year!  New stuff is sounding cool already, looking forward to hearing more.

Yeah, I love those compressed drums. I hope you can utilize that drum sound in some fleshed out tracks...with maybe some vocals? The guitar has a nice tone as well, I'm looking forward to hearing more smile

Love the ribbon sound!

Happy new year! Love the sound and looking forward to more tracks this year!

The drums have a soft crush distortion to them that's very appealing. Fat snare sound. The bass and string combo could be out of a spy thriller flick!  Great hearing your work again.

Les drums sonnent vraiment bien, sauf une des cymbales qu'on dirait qu'elle a pas de sustain (genre)... Le mix guit-bass panné c cool aussi! Hâte d'écouter tes autres trucs!

Yes, with compression, it does feel a little like closed mics.

I'll try to put some time to record my acoustic drums this year, and to improve tracking so I don't have to edit too much after the recordings... Add some tape saturation and stuff so it is gritty enough. smile

I won't complain too much about my space. I am lucky a lot to be able to record from home with my current setup, but yes acoustic drums are tough... Loud, unpredictable.

Happy you are back too!

Thanks! Will try to do a little bit every week, hoping some nice tracks will come out of it. It is really fun to listen to you guys tracks as well.

Sure, will do some songs with my vocals on it this year, slow start as I do have a lot going on at home and I don't have THAT MUCH motivation to create the next killer song YET. But yes, I'll take my electric guitars, bass, and try to cook some stuff.

Me too!!! It work really good. Have to do choices of mics, placement now as I am starting to have some options available.

Merci! p-être ma petite 16'' résonne pas aussi longtemps que les autres... Anyways! fait plaisir de prendre le temps d'essayer de composer des petits trucs chaque semaines.

Looking forward to your synth-driven post rock album!

Oooooh. quand le synth kick in, c'est magique.
Keep doing it, it's really moody and, hmmm, comforting..??

Nice, drums sound good! Welcome back!

Dang, I really I like the feel of this as it starts to coalesce.

The tuning on your drums sounds fantastic. I love the tone of that floor tom. Cool vibe. I need to add a ribbon to my collection.
