Funky beats?

By djippy on January 14, 2024 8:02 pm

Hello all!

I was able to put a little more time this week than first track, the result is not stellar yet, but give me another 50 weeks, I'll finally get something worthy! lol. I really feel it is something very different to what I did create up to date, so I suppose it is good smile .

Started with drums on this one, recorded some stuff on my acoustic drums on the garage... Wanted to try to go a little bit funky ish, I am not usually playing that stuff but still it is a 4-4 right?

Did track the bass next, did some edits, chose some chunks here and there. Added a guitar. Mixed a bit, added some modulation, delays et bit of reverbs.

Landr Mastering.

VoilĂ ...

I did try to track some vocals over it, but it wasn't great... No good message, no melodies that did elevate the track so this is an instrumental this week.

For the drums nerds here, I hope you guys have 4000USD to buy one of those TAMA bell brass reissue snare. If I was young, without kids and debts I think I would probably go for it!

Nice beat on this week 2! I always enjoy your live playing of drums, it never fails to take me back to playing in bands in a rehearsal rooms. This always sounds so real! I guess the trick though is not only mortgaging your limbs to get a great drumset, but you also need the right mics and room to record that?

Always like the raw sound you achieve.  The bass sounds huge.

love the drums! definitely funky and raw.

I'm still after a Ludwig Black Beauty. But that'll only set me back $600 or so for a used one. No $4000 drums for me.

Dark funky grooves in this one. I'm enjoying the way you're playing with with the snare/kick beats. Guitar and bass interplay is cool. Nice one!

Funky beats? Check.
Funky bass? Check.
Funky guitar? Check.
I particularly like the tone and effects you have on that guitar, adds a lot spaciousness to the track.

It is not James Brown, but I like it too. I will love your beats on a trashbin even more, recorded on your phone.

Drums itself is an expensive instrument, true... But if you have good sounding drums in a not too bad room, decent playing you can get away with only one decent microphone.

If you want to go crazy and multi track everything, yeah it can get VERY expensive...

Did start my drum recording journey with a Shure PG 6 mic kit (did pay maybe 500$ back then), a Motu 8 pre amp audio interface (maybe 7-800$).

Did add some more mics since then (maybe another 1200$ so I have enough mics to multi track drums and band) so true, it aint cheap!

You better just use your phone... it sounds almost as good. lol.

I didn't do any sound treatment on my garage or on the rehearsal local. I am just lucky that it sounds decent already.

Thanks! Yeah, bass sounds decent to me. It is DI thru my ISA one pre-amp, added a bit of saturation plus some chorus...

Yeah! I already have some drums so I am not buyer at the moment but for sure I'd love to have my own Ludwig LM402 (supraphonic), or even an acrolite (I'd take a black beauty too wink ). Those drums are specials, I do have access to some Yamaha snare drum that feels a little bit like the supra, but really the original is the best...

That is very kind of you sir! I'll try to give you some drums this year that you can appreciate.

sigh, I miss playing drums

cool funky jam!

Bbluesy funkin hoppin bop of a track.  The drums sound great.  A nice tight sound on them and had me nodding to the groove smile

i like how you record and play drums, they cut through the mix in just the right impactful way, but only to accent what's intended(it's like a more modern 'low-ego drummer' form big_smile ...everything in just the right place at just the right amount, i can recognize the great skill better like this than if it was all too flourished) heart

Nice man.  Love the slapback delay on the guitar chops, gives it a really cool spacial effect

FUNK DANCING FOR SELF-DEFENSE!
"The scene comes from the 22nd episode of The Simpson's fifth season, Secrets of a Successful Marriage, first aired in May 19th, 1994. In the episode, Homer goes to an adult education center and peeks on a class of "Funk Dancing for Self-Defense" hosted by Moe. After doing some dance moves, Moe grabs a shotgun and fires several times."
