Kill Feed

By Devieus on July 1, 2018 9:42 pm

So I've been playing some Shadowrun games lately (in 2011 magic came back into existence after being dormant after Atlantis sunk, thus the sixth world started. The games are set in the 2030's to 2080's and feature metahumans, megacorporation states and dragons) and the best results I always get when I play as Kill Feed, an elven Street Samurai. Don't let that word fool you though, street samurai in Shadowrun don't necessarily use swords, some do, but Kill Feed is a rifle user mainly.

Additionally, if the game allows for it, Kill Feed is also a rigger, which means he controls a drone to fight alongside him.

I thought to make a nice theme song for him, unfortunately for him, I suck at theme songs. Also unfortunately for him, he's not real.

I took inspiration from other Shadowrun songs, some are pretty harsh, others are ambient, but all are undeniably cyberpunk in nature (except for Horn and Ivory, for good reasons), so I attempted to make some proper synths and topped it off with a melodica. Not because it belongs, but because it wouldn't actually be too out of place in Shadowrun.

I think it works great for a theme song, makes me want to play Shadowrun again smile the lead synth has a nice breathiness to it (a bit like a pan flute?) and it goes really well with the bass' "oh" sounds (sorry I don't know the exact term!)

Yeah, that speaking bass is fantastic, like a running commentary. The melodica adds an unexpected down-home element.

I guess there are many ways to describe it, such as a wide bass and a flashy synth, an "oh" bass and a breathy synth, or maybe a goopy bass and an airy synth. Synths are weird like that, but synth is the name of the game (metaphorically anyway) for cyberpunk with magic and trolls.

Perhaps an announcement from a great dragon, those are always up to something. The melodica suites Kill Feed's lifestyle, it's portable and pretty.

This reminds me of some tracks by the swedish group '50 Hertz'. (Which, of course, is very good!)
I really like how those vocoded synths lays on top of the poor but stubborn organic drummer in the background and then how the harmonica decides to get in there and battle the laser sounding vocoded synth and his dominating synth-allies. Interesting track!

Nice work!
I really like these somewhat harsch sound of the synth.
And i love that you played that meldie on the melodica.
Always nice to mix electronic instruments with real ones...

Really like the second half which is more dominated by the melodica, good contrast between sections.

That's basically Shadowrun in a nutshell.

As Tri Angles said, musical instruments are just one track. And in this case it's one track in a synth-based cyberpunk song.

It's the two parts that make up Kill Feed, I suppose.

this has a very cool combination of epicness and rough krautrock drive! Great one...

Thanks. I'm not really versed in the German scene, I just take it as it comes along.

I've never played Shadowrun, but from your description I think this sounds like a good theme song for the character. That melodica is a nice touch and works really well in this context.

Thanks. It's a good series of games that's worth looking into.

Don't know what you are using for that main de-tuned synth sound but it is bad ass. And then came the melodica and you made it work!! This kind of has a weird, old DEVO feel. Are you playing drums as well? Sounds really natural.

So funny story there, both synths are a default Magix Music Maker plug-in, Revolta 2 with envelope filters doing the tricky stuff. As for the drums, that's also a plug-in, I don't play drums at all, it's just a really good drum kit with great sounds and maybe I've listened to too much metal.

I also noticed the song should be four bars longer, but it's just missing the intro with the bass doing the first four bars solo, so you're not missing much there.

Def has a good thematic feel to it that makes me want to check out the series.  The squelchy bass reminded me of Daft Punk but just in the tone obviously smile  Funny how the Melodica carries the "melody" tongue  Nice work!

You should check it out, it's absolutely bananas. I also made a square wave track of the melody, but it didn't carry it as far unfortunately.
