what's the deal with 11?

By deeckzeven on January 3, 2026 4:26 pm

I'd never done anything with 11/8 before, but now I have. I like the way this flows, but I really wish I could listen to it through ears unfamiliar with the rhythms now to see what that's like.

This is all Dirtywave M8, except for a little light "mastering", such as it is.

"I'd never done X before..." might end up being a common theme for my weekly beats.

Impressive, I've always struggled with alternate timings in trackers. All of those pitch sweeps are a nice touch. WB is a great place to try the "I'd never done X before..." stuff. Hope to see more.

Love it! A very successful 'experiment' if you ask me. smile

The time sig is definitely crazy. You have made it sing.

Oh wow, I am going to have to come back and listen to this one a few more times, there is so much going on here and all of it good. As I'm hearing it:

Loving the playful leads and brassy synth sound design overall.

Drums and percussion composition are just wild throughout, and I don't just mean the time signature.

Some of the reverb chippy leads around 3:30 are funnnn and are just what it needs to keep mixing things up at that point.

Throwing in a tempo change are you kidding me - and you made it work smile

Niiice outro to work down from all that energy. Queueing it up again now heart

This is cool! I like how jazzy it is while it still feels deeply electronic. Kinda runs the range of different genres, shifting and morphing while still feeling totally coherent. Can't wait to see what you do next!

Whoooah, that was super trippy! I really liked the pads in this. I'm not sure why, but it gave me PS Vita vibes. I didn't even own a PS Vita, I just borrowed one from a friend for a few months once! Hahahahaha...
So many M8 Jam folks joining in on WB 2026, this rules!!! Excited to hear what else you make!

Ooooof, you hit it out of the park with this one! Full on jazz-mode, love the detail and liveliness of it all. Those little drum fills are just so good. Odd meters can feel very forced, but you rolled with it and made it sound like something you just casually threw in. Truely mindbending stuff.
Wouldn't mind taking a peek at the bundle if you don't mind sharing smile

Honestly, if you hadn't mentioned the time signature, my brain would've just rolled with it. You make it sound easy! I love how loose and jazzy this feels, and you take it through several major tone shifts that never seem jarring or out of place.

For what it's worth, I can't *feel* 11. But after enough repetition I can feel (or convince myself that i can feel) smaller groups that add up to 11. For example a lot of the beginning is grouped (in my head anyway) 5-3-3. So if i walk around the house chanting (with accents) 1-2-3-4-5,1-2-3,1-2-3, the rhythm starts to feel more natural, almost like some lopsided 3.

Just listening as I write this one... every part of this is so fun! I can't even comprehend how you arranged this honestly. One last note coming to mind is how different all the sounds are in this, but... somehow it totally works in context?

This is so cool! The synth choices give it a retro neon urban vibes. I love the varied percussion patterns throughout. Combined with the time signature it gave the rhythm kind of a forward lurching/meandering feel. Really nice landing at the end when everything slows down.

Really interesting progression but it works! I really dig how playful it sounds.
I have my eyes closed while listening to this, and it kinda makes me think of a Sonic & Knuckles alternative ending theme.

I honestly dig it! Hope to hear more from you!

Damn. This one's a lot - in all the good ways. Not gonna get bored of it anytime soon. It's so complex, and so charming in how the sounds are all so classic and/or "crusty" (I say this with love), but used in such a novel way. Everything feels so opaque, yet intentional. I can't imagine how you went about making this and figuring out the overall arc. And despite all the chaos, the mix just works! Super impressed!

This is delightful chaos - chaos because the "11" makes it so your brain can't quite latch on to any anchor point. It's like rolling around in a fun house of music. Amazing job making 11/8 awesome!

This is incredible. My life is better for hearing it heart

aammmmaaaaazzzing!!! every instrument contributes to the funky groove and the 11 is making it quite confusing but it's consistent by the sound of it... even tho I don't understand the rhythm I really love what I'm hearing! mix is awesome too. there are some catchy melodies in here tho it's still so complicated I can't really latch onto any of em. but I'll definitely come back to this one.

oh shit what is happening to the groove noooooo ahahaaha pretty wild slowdown! I was gonna take a quick nap after this track anyway, thanks for this

Thanks! Sliding the chords around seems to sort of hide the fact that it is a very simple progression. smile M8 grooves make weird time signatures relatively easy! (But there are plenty of other ways to do it too.)

Thank you for listening!

Thank you! I definitely started with some lurching melodies and rhythms. The iterative de-lurched worked better than I imagined it would. smile

Thank you so much for the detailed listen! That ending started as a bit of a cop out, but in the end I think I appreciate it as a release from all the busyness.

Thank you for listening! I think this was heavily informed by Snarky Puppy, even though its not really the same direct style.

M8 is such a perfect tool for a weekly thing. I never had a Vita, but I did have a PSP and I think I get what you mean. Easy to imagine the brassy hypersynth and crunchy drums coming out of the PSP speaker. Thanks for listening!

Thank you for listening! Bird by bird, buddy. I had fun adding layers and making variations here. Crazy how a tiny bit of interplay between layers makes things sound so much more complicated than they really are.

Thank you for listening! Yeah, taming the lurch (at least a little anyway) was a fun rhythmic puzzle.

Thank you for the detailed listen! And thanks for noticing the mix; it was struggletown for a bit.

It's been a few days now and I now have to really work to find the downbeat, though I'm not sure it even really functions as a downbeat. The beat just seems to roll continuously. Thanks for listening!

What a nice thing to say, thank you!

There was a brief period when I mostly understood the rhythms. But after a few days away from it, it is pretty disorienting. Thanks for listening!

zappa esque but in a fun electronic almost video game or cartoon way. loved it!

This is soo good, I need to learn from your wizardry heart
