Canoe

This piece features violin and clarinet--Me-violin and my sister clarinet. We often played together at home combining the two instruments really well.
Perhaps you can imagine 2 high school girls dragging a canoe into the Roaring (hahahaha-in places it was 4 ft deep) DuPage River in Northern Illinois.
My parents didn't know we were doing this and would have never permitted it. We were in league with our cunning older (college aged) brother who strapped his 17'aluminum canoe to the top of his "Oasis green" Chevy Vega (can you imagine?). He did this for us because he sensed that my sister and I were not allowed to do anything he thought was fun! He was right. The crime in our small city was astounding and caused my parents to be very protective. As I look back (after raising my own children) my parents were probably right-- situations in our city were very dangerous. My sister and I were little nerd-children who practiced our instruments, went to rehearsals, wrote music and poetry, sketched things, cooked, lots of needle-work, gardening etc.
So, on this summer day in c. 1974, (with no life jackets or cell phones) we were deposited on a mildly steep bank, with a "Good Luck" from dear brother. He was to meet us in 1 hour at another portage site. My sister and I had been thoroughly instructed on where it was and that if we did not appear, he was going to tell Dad. That would be unimaginably bad, involving my Dad's good friend the Police Chief.
We managed (to our astonishment) to get the canoe into the River and get going. We really had no trouble, and it WAS really fun! We meet dear brother at the appointed place, and he (thankfully) helped us drag the canoe up to the car. It was strapped on again, then we celebrated at Seven Dwarves Burger and Ice Cream.
My parents never-ever knew we did this.
