Frustration

By dadboy on January 30, 2026 10:28 pm

So the title about sums it up. This has been a challenging week. Pretty much everywhere we look, it seems like things aren't as they should be, and I'm feeling the weight of it this week. The track really reflects that. I have mixed feelings about it—it's hard for me to be objective, and my feelings of frustration definitely got mixed up in the creative process here.

This is an M8 track, originally built around a Boards of Canada-ish bass patch I made on the TEO-5 (directly inspired by this complete banger of a hidden gem, which you should 100% check out). I struggled for a while to build it out, and it felt really flat and boring to me. In an attempt to spice it up, I ended up creating this 808 cowbell-ish sound on the TEO-5, and suddenly this became a bit of a downtempo phonk tune. Like I said, I still have mixed feelings, but it was time to put it down. Hopefully this conveys and captures the feelings of this week, but I can set them aside and move on to another (hopefully better) week. Stay well, friends!

Get the demons out. Nice work on the video. It seems like everything came together even if it was a challenging week. I'm still amazed by what you M8 tracker guys can do.

Thanks! Yeah, it felt good to get it out. I've committed to myself that I'll do all 52 weeks even if I have to upload crap now and then—thankfully I haven't gotten quite that far yet, lol. The M8 is awesome, but I will say I lean preeeeeetttyyyy heavily on the TEO-5, so it feels like slight cheating tongue

Love it! The cowbell-ish sound also reminds me a lot of BoC. I love the 'wiggly' sound of this style. I often end up putting some vibrato on stuff to emulate it. Awesome work as always!

Good job on ploughing through and finishing this! The track's the better for it. That off-pitch shift is really haunting, in a good way.

Nice surprise around 1:30!

Hope this week flows better for you smile

banger track, love the lead!
congratz on pushing through this week smile

Thanks! Yeah a lot of that tape wow/flutter effect on the cowbell is from the onboard lofi effect on the TEO-5, which is basically a tape emulation effect. I sometimes will replicate a similar effect on the M8 (even with internal synth stuff) by sampling/resampling, then downsampling to make it crunchier/slightly more distorted, then putting an LFO on pitch, with some AMP to taste (no specific amp type, just whatever sounds the best on that given patch). The nice thing about doing it that way is that modulating the pitch of a sample doesn't just change the pitch, but also the playback speed, which gives it that more tape-like sound.

Thanks! Glad you liked that tape stop. It felt a bit like cheating, lol—I couldn't think of a great way to melodically link those two sections, so I figured I'd use trickery and dynamics to help with that transition.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. This past week definitely was tougher, but I still really am enjoying this overall. It's also nice to be making stuff again, after not really making anything for almost 6 months. Looking forward to the rest of the year!

oof loving that BoC synth and the tape fx transition into the next section.  That bass sounds so thick!  This was an awesome release and escape \m/

Thanks! If you like that, you should definitely check out that song I linked above by Five Nine Alaska. That bass was a huge inspiration for me here (not sure how he made it, but I recreated it on the TEO-5), and it's a great track. Thanks for listening, and glad you enjoyed smile

heard this in the weeklybeats stream.  very well done - I love the change up

Sorry to hear that's been the case this week, buddy. Yeah, these are definitely trying times. A lot of shit is just sideways.
At least we still get to make art - no one will take that away.
I liked the downtempo feel of the track. Super snappy boom-bap feel to it, too. I almost feel like it would be great to rap on!

Thanks for listening! Yeah, I'm not really a rapper, but that definitely would fit with the phonk feel. There are these gaming pop-ups that happen pretty often around me where folks do synth and DJ sets, and oftentimes people will go up and freestyle over them. I played one in the fall, it was a ton of fun, but my music normally doesn't lend itself to that. I might save this one (and a few others) for next time I play one of those!

Yeah, that bass was a ton of fun, I'm a sucker for growly basses. I'd like to revisit that patch and use it in another song at some point. Thanks for listening!

Love the broader structure of the song, such a journey without just wandering aimlessly

It's a shame when songs just sound like more music and feel pointless, this is NOT that. It differentiates itself and deserves to be heard

I'm not formally classically trained, although I've got some training, and my wife went to a conservatory. It's enough for me that I often struggle with an internal voice that critiques my songs for lack of melodic or harmonic complexity. It's tough because I definitely do want to grow in those songwriting skills, but ultimately I'm really just making music to try to convey something . I do feel like I at least did that here.

Thanks for listening, glad you enjoyed!

Definitely got that BoC bittersweet thing going on, love it. And the tape stop transition midway through was pretty mind-blowing on first listening! Really nice work done in tough times, thanks for sharing this.

Oh! And that bass grit throughout, fantastic.

Love the big step feel to the track - so bold and brash with elements of hope.  That wonky lead is fabulous

Thank you! Yeah it wasn't until that cowbell thing that it really felt like it came together. Thanks for listening!

I love this, man!

Perfectly reflects the frustration you're talking about. Both in your internal process and the world at large.

The cowbell lead is so cool!

Thank you! I feel like that is fitting for me - I could be a lot of things, but I feel like my soft, squishy lil self will always peek through somewhere smile

Glad you enjoyed!

Listening now and really enjoying their sound.  So cool you were able to recreate that synth.  It almost sounds like a paraphonic synth?

Glad you liked it! The only thing they put out was that one album - I really hope they eventually do more music. I think it could be a monophonic synth or patch, but with full sustain/no attack/minimal or no release, with portamento on some notes. For me I can't remember if I had it in unison mode or kept it poly (I think I had it in unison because the voice steals), but I relied on detuned oscillators, heavy distortion, the vintage knob, and the lofi effect to get that effect. In the end I made tweaks to it for this song, but the original patch I made sounds really faithful. Honestly sound design is half the fun for me, and recreating patches is a good way for me to get out of ruts.

This is so good, it's madness.

cathartic tune. I resonate with the mood. making music helps the most out of all the things I tried for coping. well, that and dancing I guess.

as for building the track and it feeling somehow uninspired - I can resonate with that feeling too, sometimes it's hard to figure out how to make it interesting and I don't really have an answer except make it groovy and keep cranking em out. that's a general observation, not particularly about this track, as to me it sounds fine, probably cause I didn't hear it a thousand times before exporting.

what does stand out in this track to me tho is that the sections are pretty much 4 bars each, and maybe that could be a trick to explore: doing things melodically or rhythmically that go beyond the 4 bar loops, start earlier or later than the 1, so it breaks up the monotony. just an idea to explore for future ones...

Thanks, that's good advice. Yeah, one thing I definitely am aware of (and sometimes feel self-conscious about) is that most of what I make is based around these fairly static/predicable loops. I do think that a lot of times that actually can be appropriate for what I'm going for, because it creates a solid sense of structure or safety which is helpful as I explore chaotic and uncertain feelings. That said, it definitely can be limiting, and can be part of why I might feel my stuff is "boring" sometimes. I'll definitely think about that going forward. Thanks for listening and for the thoughtful comment!

hey, as long as it's *intentional*, nothing wrong with a bunch of good 4 bar loops! happy to contribute!

i only listened to this one song and was like "yeah i'm buying the entire discography heart

heart thank you!

Unbelievable tones, big feels, everything tasteful and it sits nicely in the track even in that perfectly chaotic pitchy break - love this and everything you're doing.

Good job channeling those feelings into music. There's grit and dirt and tons of wobble perfectly encaptulating that brooding anger and a really solid melody to boot. This one goes high on my list of favorite Dadboy songs. That tape stop in the middle sounds insane!

Thank you! Figuring out how to add that grit and dirt has been one of my favorite things I've learned over the last year or so. It's funny to me that this song that I was so unsure of has received such a positive response, but it's been really encouraging and has given me lots of ideas going forward. I also decided to throw this one into a set next week, so we'll see how it goes, there! heart

isn't it funny how sometimes the frustraiting tracks get positive responses - i'm not sure we are the most reliable critics of our own work - you want to be proud of the work & editing is a skill/talent... but sometimes it's just our job to do the work and see what happens...

Absolutely! That's been one of the nice things and weeklybeats - I kinda gotta post it whether I like it or not! Thanks for listening smile

Sounds like a very contemplative song! I liked the transition around 1:30 and my favorite part was the ending starting around 2:30 smile

Enjoyed this one a lot! The crushing oppressive feeling you talk about really comes through. Cool sound design work with the side panned snare verb(?) too

Thanks! I don't remember specifically panning the snare (although I definitely could have and forgot, lol), but I did use some m8 resampling trickery to make a gated snare. Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it! heart

oh maaan, that 1:37 break.... had to rewind! Thanks for the vibe, dB!

This is sick! Takes you on a journey.
