Failure

Hello again! I was (a little) afraid I wouldn't manage to be able to write another song this week and be exposed as the fraud that I am, but somehow I managed! I've had such a good time this week listening to everyone's tracks, and I'm amazed at the wealth of talent and positivity in this community.

Often times when I ideate on the m8, I end up quickly abandoning my ideas. This probably happens 80% of the time (if not more). While I do struggle not to be too hard on myself, the part of me that is paranoid and a hoarder doesn't let me get rid of anything, so I've got a ton of these sketches just sitting around. I had a couple of other ideas this week (including one that's very different for me that I'd like to come back to), but I ended up just taking a look through some of my more recent abandoned sketches. This one was primarily based around a fat bassline that I'd sampled off my TEO-5 that I kinda liked. I kept building around on the M8 and it grew from there. The garnish is the lead, which is one of my favorite patches I've made (also on the TEO-5), which is a nice wailing guitar sound that's fun to play.

this is what the TEO was made for! love the bassline, cool vid too

Very fitting that I'm enjoying another of your tracks on the stream rn. Great tone all around, you make me want a TEO-5 with these gorgeous filtered tones.

I wanna cruise down a a street lines with palm trees to your music.

Love the gradual build up at the beginning to the bassline. Feels like you're getting it arranged right before taking off on the drive.

Dude... The experience you wrote about in your post resonates SO DEEPLY with me. Including the part of abandoning but still saving many, many little ideas.
Like you've done here, a lot of them can be used in weeks where your prime song just doesn't quite pan out.
I really like what you've made here BTW. That guitar lead is so sick. I'm actually super partial to your particular flavor of upbeat/uplifting synthwave. Really well done here!

hell yes. loved this on the stream but even better at night just before bed.

the lead is s level incredible and the atmosphere is great.

Thanks! Yeah it's got such character, I love it.

It's so good, I want to get a desktop module and polychain for 10 voices

heart We'll have to actually meet up sometime soon! I've actually got a couple local shows over the next two months, I'll DM you with details.

Thanks! Figuring that part out was what finally helped this track come together for me. Initially it was just me doubling it up with an m8 wavsynth bass so I could more easily do the tempo modulation (I sampled the TEO-5 before I decided to try that) but then I tried some polyrhythmic stuff and I loved it

Thank you! I'm thankfully also just having fun making stuff and feeling liberated to not have everything have to be "a thing." I love that guitar lead, too - that's also the TEO-5 smile

Thank you! Your track was so awesome, too. I didn't realize you'd used the prophet 6 - after the TEO-5 I'm really pining for more sequential stuff. It sounded so good!

Mmm that teo5. The delay on the higher string sounds at 3min is magical. Diggggin this!

Thanks! Yeah I love that karplus strong pluck. Those were macrosynth with some redux and that delay dialed in. Glad you liked it - I appreciate it!

Think this is one of my favourites I've heard from you!
Gorgeous sound design. I second the many comments that this makes me want a TEO-5.
Your videos on the M8 discord were my introduction to that synth, actually.

P.S. My song this week was inspired by yours from last week. Very different styles. But I wanted to go for a similar happy/sad vibe. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am pretty confident that multiple of those abandoned sketches turn out to be gold to others, like this one! Again, great sounds and great composition.

I also really appreciate you opening up in the accompanying text. Not only does it resonate a lot, but in a funny way it is also encouraging reading this from someone who's music I have been carrying around with me for some time now. Just in case it wasn't clear enough yet: Love your work!

Thanks! I love the TEO-5 so much—I think I may eventually pick up a desktop unit so I can polychain and have 10 voices. It's so musical and fun, and it sounds so good. I really appreciate your note, and I really enjoyed your track this week!

Thanks! I really appreciate that. I can be a chronic oversharer so I worry about that sometimes, but I'm glad that resonated. I know I said this on your post already, but I really really like your track this week, and I can't wait to hear more!

Amazing, soaring synthwave goodness. That hammered sound shouldn't fit but it's AWESOME! I want a whole album of this pls

This builds so well! Layers keep getting added but it doesn't feel cluttered, awesome job!

Haha, if you're gonna twist my arm... Thanks, though! I appreciate it. By hammered, do you mean the kick, or the plucks later?

Very uplifting sound, nice production, I could see this in a movie.

dadboy wrote:

Oh! The plucks for sure. Not a sound I expected, but it worked super well!
And if you're gonna do a whole synthwave album....well.... I won't stop you.

Great spacious sound

Thank you! I definitely take a lot of inspiration from more cinematic artists. Someday I'd love to score something.

Plucks often surprise me - for such an aggressive/distinctive sound they can fit in a ton of different settings!

Hoooboy when that snare beat kicks in, you know what you're in for and the synths that show up later really deliver.   Congratulations on keeping the mix feeling so full yet airy with all those huge parts bouncing around (with epic reverb and all).   The final form is pleasantly light on its feet in contrast to the  slow diresmacks+pluckbass opener.

Great track!

Thanks! I really appreciate that. I like to keep things kind of messy (lots of tape plugins and things like that) so it can take a lot of work to keep things from getting muddy. Glad that's coming through! I also definitely love taking really driving/somewhat negative emotionally charged pieces and complicating them with lighter and more complex pieces, where the end product is neither exclusively aggressive and bitter or upbeat and happy. I'm glad you liked it!

Love the way this builds, each layer adds something new. The leads at 1:33 and 2:12 are so sweet and perfectly placed. Great work!

Keep on trucking, you got this!
Nice mixing on this one. Sounds like it came straight off an 80ies VHS.

Thanks! I think this is one I'll work into a live show coming up - that lead is so much fun to play.

Thanks! I always worry I'm oversharing, lol, so I'm glad it was additive smile

ooof how the arp slowly comes alive inside the breathing is so cool.  Gives me some mellowdrone vibes with the soaring synth and bass.  \m/  hell yais on that metallic synth bouncing about.  Suhweet tape thingy at the end too

wow that lushed up nicely!

You may continue this ruse you have going on for a while longer. 😂 These phat chonky beats will absolutely suffice for awesome jamming. Great driving tune.
