Start Again

By Cursory on January 27, 2024 10:00 pm

Happy week 4! Felt more successful in generating and fleshing out a new idea this week and had the time to do so. I realized early in the process that the verse + chorus are heavily influenced by "Disciples" by Tame Impala - give that a listen if you haven't, it's short and very cool. I also felt myself leaning into plenty of cliches here but I think this was just going to be that kind of song.

Lyrics started mostly as words that fit the sounds/rhythms that felt right. The first half of the lyrics are pretty much unchanged from this, then I tried to retcon them to have meaning with the second half >.< I figured it would be weird if I didn't call this one "Start Again" with how many times that phrase was used... Pretty happy with how things came together arrangement-wise, and I enjoyed putting together the choruses that just feel bigger/louder than what I usually do.

Trying the fancy hidden lyrics BBCode thing I've seen others do, will post them in a comment if I did it wrong.

Beautiful. Your songwriting is always cozy and exceptional! heart

Looks to me like the BBCode thing worked just fine. big_smile I actually never knew that was an option - you'll have to teach me how it works sometime!

Sounds awesome! Wonderful vibes all around. Nice lyrics too

This is a vibe. I love how fully realized this feels as a weekly track! Great harmonies and voicings.

It sounds beautiful and well polished. Great work.

Sweet! Has a good groove. I especially like the subtle acoustic guitar licks used as 'fills' (1:00 & 1:45 are good examples). Nice work. Keep 'em coming!

Great vibe. I really like the part around 2:10. The background vocals, the tambourine, and the vocal melody/harmonies. Just perfect heart

I love the vocal processing on this track.

I can hear what you mean with the chorus being inspirered by Disciples, especially the rhythm. This track really has it's own beautiful vibe though. The vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar gives it a warmth that Tame Impala doesn't quite have (though I love Tame Imapala a lot!)

I quite like the bass line and smooth electric guitars.

Nice vocal harmonies.

Ahhhh, lush song!

Great track, I second the comment above about the part at 2:10, such a nice nice touch.

The little syncopation in the guitar lead is such a nice hook. Love the relaxed melody. Bg vox "ooh"s are great. This is a wonderful track! Really enjoyed it, thanks.

I can see myself playing this on repeat.

yeah, the vocals really make it an exceptional track and it's because they're mixed and layered perfectly to match the detail of the music in such a way that everything is clear without the vocals being too loud in the mix which is really common in music.

Great work on this track it kept pulling me in even at first when I wasn't sure I'd dig it. Really cool

Much appreciated, I think this is probably the most time I've spent and consequently the most "finished" I've felt with a track on here.

Thanks, the ones at 1:45 were a late add when I decided to take the out guitars for that verse, I figured it needed something. Glad they worked for you!

Thanks! They're just double-tracked (with light reverb/eq/compression I think). I lean on double-tracking a lot to make vocals sound richer but worry this is a bad habit haha.

Yes! Thanks for confirming that for me. I think the resulting song sounds pretty different, but I'm sure I'll accidentally rip off Tame Impala again soon haha.

Thanks! I initially had the background vocals on the same part around :52, but figured I'd leave it out to make it more impactful the second time.

That's great to hear, I'm never sure and know I often miss the mark with this too but glad it worked for you here!

That's awesome, thank you!
