Vanish

By Cosmic Cairns on January 9, 2026 7:35 pm

We had an unseasonably warm December in these parts.  I think it was the day before Christmas I took my dogs for a walk and it was pleasant enough outside to wear shorts and a t-shirt.  Over the last few days things have gotten colder and windier (still nothing compared to many parts of the world) and I'm okay with that.  It's winter and it should be a little chilly out there.  Anyway, this song was vaguely inspired by the weather.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It's still weeks until spring
But there's a bluebird warbling
Before long it takes wing
As alarm bells start to ring
I can almost remember
When this world was sparkling
And I know that things would change if I were king

There's a storm on its way
But for now I feel okay
If I could I would stay
Keep my worries far away
And while millions of bright balloons
Float by throughout the day
I know soon enough the sky will turn to gray

And the years hurry past
As if they're in a race
I just need a moment
To vanish without a trace

Closed my eyes tried to sleep
But then I tumbled to the sea
Crawled ashore on my knees
Shivering in the ocean breeze
I tried to take flight again
Into the galaxy
And the shooting star you saw last night was me

Man. I love these lyrics. I struggle to settle on a single sentence in a week much less an entire song.
Great job.

Yes, week two brings a smile to my face to hear you again well done! Love it!

"And the shooting star you saw last night was me"  heart
what a great melody!

Love the guitar melody break and the solo. Wonderful lyrics as always.

I would rather live in that world than what we have now. At least there would be royalty mandated time for our weekly beats, and we would get to all collectively enjoy the king's dope tunes ♥️

a lovely, relaxed vibe here. I like the tempo and the groove that illustrates a sort of walkabout very well. And the guitar solo in the end is ace! Great piece.

love the feel of the guitar.  had me swayin back and forth and enjoying the groove.  Excellent lyrics too heart

always love your lyrics, they carry so much positivity, but still hold this maturely wider perspective... like the fact that everything leaves a trace, and we can be thankful of each and every trace smile
also love all the guitar tones, they all mix beautifully together heart

Definitely gets that "false spring" mood across, where you know that you personally are okay, but storms hang heavy elsewhere are moving in fast. Gentle guitar strums and the kind of vocal sincerity I associate with They Might Be Giants sings with the bluebirds, until they can't hold back the storm anymore and the ripping guitar solo tears in. Nice work

A fully realized song! Very nice

What a nostalgic vibe for whatever reason (the music). It really made me pause and listen.

>And the shooting star you saw last night was me
perfect ending, great lyrics

I like how the guitar doubles create a groovy bit of syncopation, gives the whole track a toe tappin' energy.

Dog mentions require pictures. Lmao this has been a week of ilzxc demanding dogs from orange drink and mzunguko and now you. (Aside: cat game in pets only pics on Discord is currently dominating, this community got some glorious kittens!)

^ this. Appreciate the life-affirming joy in the tune, need more of this.

Thanks!  Writing lyrics definitely takes some effort, but I (mostly) enjoy doing it.  I don't always feel like I nail them, but I do my best.

Thanks!  Your kind comment brought a smile to my face, too.

I hummed the melody into my phone just before the holidays after it just popped into my head.  I knew I wanted to do something with it sooner rather than later, so week 2, here it is!

Thanks!  I felt pretty good about the guitar stuff and the lyrics this week.  Hopefully I can kind of set a bar for the year at least.  smile

I don't have any illusions that I would be able to solve all of the world's problems, but I bet I could at least improve a little on the way things are now.  Probably wouldn't be too hard considering the shit-show we're currently enduring.  And making art and music would for sure be a priority.

Thanks!  I was reasonably happy with how the guitar solo turned out.  It just seemed to click into place pretty quickly, which is usually a good sign.

I think that's where I'm generally at in my worldview at the moment.  Fully aware of how things are, but still seeking the positive on the whole.  It's hard not to get a little down sometimes, and I'm sure that will come through in some of my lyrics this year, but my nature is to try to find silver linings.

I always try to take note when a moment is at the very least okay, even when I know storms are coming.  I guess I have a vocal quality that bears some similarities to the Johns because I get the TMBG comparison decently often.  They were one of my faves from back in the day, so that's cool with me.

I'm prone to feeling nostalgic sometimes, so I'm sure that pokes its way through.  Thanks!

Pics you say?  Okay, let me see if I can get this to work.  This is George and Rockie aka two of the cairn terriers responsible for my name.

Yessssss, I love them! Send them warmest regards, what a badass team you have. I meant to ask you about them ever since I heard you explain your name on chasing the beats. heart

Warm winter up here in WA too, hmmm. Sus.
Love these lyrics, have to close my eyes and go on this journey. Great melody.
Those are some sweet Cairn family, nice to see the namesake!

Man, I missed your songwriting.  This is great, really love the strings.

A classic cosmic classic
- Ebrit

what a delightful romp - thanks for the warm up from the land buried in snow

somehow this song feels a bit like a hug, with some soft melancholy in it?  i like the guitar parts/solo at the end, especially the slower first one, fun!

Thanks!  They're very friendly guys.  I gave them your regards, and now as far as they're concerned you're pretty much Uncle ilzxc now.  smile

I feel a little guilty hearing about how cold it's been elsewhere, but I'm trying to just enjoy pleasant weather when I can.  Thanks for listening!

Thank you, kindly.  I hope you're keeping warm out there!  I spent four years in college in Illinois, so I know those midwest winters are no joke.

Thanks! Melancholy hugs can be some of the best kind, really.

Epic. Especially your guitarsolos. Love the lyrics as well.
