Quark Enlarger

By Cosmic Cairns on February 20, 2026 7:25 pm

I didn't have a total plan where I was going when I sat down to start this one, but I did kind of think it was going to go in a different direction than how it ended up.  Like with chord changes and stuff.  Instead I almost immediately hypnotized myself with the guitar line I stumbled on and decided to just let it ride.  I piled on some more guitars and noises courtesy of the microkorg and monotron delay.  It ends a little abruptly because I had to just kind of stop.  I probably could have kept on going for like 20 minutes or something.

In other news I released a new album this week.  It's kind of an abstract journey through space, and I think it came out pretty cool.  I kind of seem to drift into some different directions when I have longer than a week to work on a track.  If you want to see what I was up to during 2025, you can check it out on Bandcamp here: https://cosmiccairns.bandcamp.com/album/kicking-stars or you can find it on the streaming sites.

I do realize that listening to WB tracks takes priority, so if you want to bookmark it to check out later or whatever, that's cool, too.  Special shoutout to orangedrink for downloading it like within a minute of me posting it.  You rock!

Hold on tight as we spiral down
Into the underground where we won't be found
And now I see the light I'm a supercharger
And a quark enlarger and I'm on embargo
Don't look now but the Earth is shaking
And there's no mistaking that the world is breaking
Can't believe at this late hour
The amount of power that's still held by cowards
Let's bring them down and start a whole new order
Time is getting shorter and we can't afford it

This is hypnotic!! AND THOSE LYRICS, helll fuckin yeah. Dude totally checking out the album!!

this is a vibeeeeeeeee!!!! immediately gives me a baba o'riley feeling

I'm about 15 seconds into the song and I just need to come here to post "yes, I need more of this".

Head nodding, I can see how you can get lost in this. Will definitely bookmark the album, congrats!

This was great! Totally hypnotizing, yeah!!!

i bought the album, congrats!

also, real talk, before you invest in an enlarger, i think you should be satisfied with the size of your quark.  i mean who cares about the size, it's all about the speed, amirite????  lol

microkorg noises are HOT

I love the charge of momentum in this song, very true to the feeling of a 'quark enlarger' heart

The little synth bits sounds just like a real quark enlarger! Or is this an actual recording of one? wink Really love the lyrics and the guitars too. Great song!

Love the triple rhyme structure in each couplet (especially the slant rhyme of "afford it"). Always like when you throw in a cross-rhythm part like the synths at 1:08 and 2:31 (and throughout). And while this isn't a motorik beat, the dual guitar lines with synth lasers overhead has the same hypnotic-psychedelic vibe of Neu! Nice work

I was fully committed to loving this track before I knew there were lyrics—"Can't believe at this late hour
/ The amount of power that's still held by cowards
" is such a great line.  The various types of LFO fun starting around ~2:30 make for a great outro.

I really dig the psychedelic / hypnotic elements, locked me into the groove of the song, felt like it could have gone on forever!

This has that revered NEU vibe that I love... absolutely gorgeous track! Like the lyrics too...

oooh hail yais! love the hypnotic feel of the guitars and their harmonies with your vocals. This was an epic trip! Well done!

i have also been hypnotized! that guitar part is so great

Hypnotic guitars, nice signing, and 80s scifi sounds. This is awesome!

Higgs Bosominal.

That guitar riff is sick.  Love the super syncy synth sound too.  Very cool stuff.

nice hypnotic groove! love the dentist noises and synth lines! this is what I mean when I say "lean into it" on a groove, very cool! the longer you keep going on the same groove, the more ideas come to make it cooler!

cool lyrics altho it was hard to follow from the audio only.

This was a fantastic song. A perfect balance of elements. Loved the vocals and the lyrics. Amazing work!

Ahhh this is so fun. Opening gave me barenaked ladies vibes in the best ways.

The title got me excited. The song kept the excitement. I'm doing a kind of swim flow dance here. All the different references in the comments are fun, NEU to Barenaked Ladies, hell yeah!
Congrats on the album, will get that! Loving the instrumental part around 2:15, the synth, yeah the NEU part. SWEET. Vocal parts are sweet too though.

Thanks!  I definitely hypnotized myself.

I can see that.  I always liked the opening to Baba O'Riley.  Well, I like the whole song, but the opening is super cool.

My very first take was only about two minutes long and I was like, no, I need more so I went back and kept going, and then I was like, um, I could do this forever.  Better stop now before it gets completely ridiculous.

It was an easy one to get lost in.  Thanks for listening!

I don't know if you saw, but I gave you a shoutout in the description.  I had literally just posted the album, and then I went to check my email and already had one from Bandcamp telling me you had bought it along with the other one.  Thanks, so kindly.  You rock!  And, yes, investing in a quark enlarger when what you really want is a quark accelerator is a rookie mistake.  I only have the enlargers in stock, so if some rich idiot wants to buy one to stroke their own ego, who am I to tell them no?

I tried to capture what I imagined one would sound like.  Thanks for listening!

This song is secretly an advertisement for my quark enlarger business and I sampled the noise they make for the song.  They retail for the low, low price of $9,999,999,999.99.  Get yours today!  smile  At least this is what I imagine they would sound like if I had such an enterprise.

Thanks!  It was a long time ago now, but I remember when I realized that rhymes in songs didn't have to be exact rhymes in order to invoke the feeling of a rhyme, and it helped unlock something for me in lyric writing.

It was way too much fun adding the sound effects to this.  I felt like a bit of a mad scientist.  And, yes, I very much believe in that line you quoted.  Thanks for listening!

It was a little different than my usual approach, but I enjoyed making this one.  Might have to explore some more hypnotic/groove oriented tracks this year.  Thanks for listening!

I noticed after the fact that it had a krautrock feel to it, probably NEU! in particular.  It was one of those things I didn't set out to do, but it's undeniably there. It's a style I really enjoy, but haven't explored too much in my own music.  I really might have to do a little more along these lines this year though.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!  I was happy with how those guitars and vocals all just seemed to come together easily.  You never know with these sorts of things.  smile

Thanks!  I just stumbled on it right off the block and was like, hey, I kind of like that.  I think I'll just repeat it endlessly. smile

LOL.  Love Higgs Bosominal.  Seems like the perfect description.

Thanks!  Sometimes I shy away from being overly repetitive because I fear it can get boring, but it really is how you establish a groove.  And yeah, I always include the written lyrics because I know it can be hard sometimes to understand them all.  I guess that's something I could probably improve with mixing or in the actual performance, but I also know there are professionally recorded and immaculately produced songs where I can't understand lyrics, so lyric sheets FTW!

Thanks!  The vocals and lyrics were important to me, but it was also important to shut up and let the music go for a while.

I only really know their hits.  I didn't know BNL had anything like that.  Is there a particular song it reminds you of?

Thanks!  It's always fun to see the different comparisons that songs evoke.  I do think NEU! really took me over on this one, especially for the last part of the song.

The krautrock is strong with this one.

I'll check the album if I can find the time. As you can see, we're already a few weeks behind, so it'll be a while.
Good jam though.

Thanks!  And no worries.  WB for sure takes priority.
