Preposterous Hypothesis

By Cosmic Cairns on October 16, 2024 8:10 pm

It seems like a simplistic concept, but I really do think if everyone were just a little bit nicer to each other, we'd live in a much better world.  I was just kind of thinking about that as I wrote the lyrics.  Then I just had some fun playing around with some distorted sounds during the extended outro.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

I had a crazy idea
The world could be a better place
If we viewed ourselves as one big family
And gave everyone a little grace

If we all looked out for each other
Would that be such a heinous thing?
Maybe we weren't meant to go it all alone
A choir takes many voices to sing

I love the positivity here and all of the wacky sounds. Good stuff!

Such a good and solid production. I highly praise your guitarwork here. This is how an outro must sound like. Honey to my ears. And did I hallucinate or did I detect female support? You are suggesting beautiful universal ethics here. Well done maestro.

a better world is possible.  heart

excellent melody and heartfelt lyrics! that guitar outro was so wild!
did i hear some sped up harmonies? nice work, CC!

the guitars sound amazing, so many cool tones and effects, really great song!

cooperation over competition put into overdrive, all that was missing from that outro was a guitar smash!

just what the doctor ordered! A very cool power pop track witha decent message. The double vocals work fine too... I also like the thing that the high pitched string synth does during the verses. Very impressive stuff. That auto wah wah middle part is also very cool.

The rhyme "Preposterous Hypothesis" reminds me of a fantastic verse from The Flight of the Conchords'"Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros" (starting at 0:44).
Indeed, I agree, things would be so much better if we didn't automatically assume ill intent so frequently. So many of the issues we face when interacting with each other come from just poor communication and the inability to convey messages clearly to each other, or due to the message just being heard on one side not matching up with what exactly was said on the other.
It's also worth noting that this shouldn't be used to excuse hateful bigots who want to bully certain minorities out of existence.
Anyways, thanks for the sweet song and kind message!

I like your hypothesis, its possible! This is a good summary and delivery of the proposal. Good ideas like this are best delivered in fun, upbeat, catchy songs, so thanks for helping make the world a better place Cosmic!
Dig the backing vocals. The instrumental section part way in is fun, fun track!

I was going to say the same thing! Totally thought of this, now I'm doing a mashup of both in my head.

Really cool intro that leads into the vocals.  Suhweet vocal harms and such a uplifting guitar melody that got me groovin along smile

that synth and melody during the verse parts is cool, what is it? Great guitar sound. Nice job!

You are reaching for the stars here, Ethan. Luckily you brought me with you. This is really sweet!

Positivity and wacky sounds are always good in my book.  It almost seems like that would be a good album title.

Thanks!  Sometimes it's both fun and necessary to make some crazy noise.  No female backup here (I've tried in the past to get my wife to contribute some backing vocals, but she's too shy).  I did speed up some of the backing vocals as jwh detected.

You did indeed hear some sped up harmonies.  And actually after the line about the choir I also did both sped up and slowed down "ahs".  Brings back fun memories of manipulating the tape speed during my 4-track days.  Will definitely have to do it some more.

Thanks!  It was a lot of fun putting that outro together especially.

It seems like our society stresses competition so heavily and yet all of the greatest things humans have achieved  usually require a lot of cooperation.  I do think our priorities are often messed up.

Thanks!  The wah wah effect was pretty cool on its own and then it was fun to put some nasty distortion on it.

That's funny!  I remember watching a little bit of Flight of the Conchords back in the day, but I don't remember this song.  The lyric in question definitely popped out at me when I listened to it just now.  I actually came up with the title after recently re-watching the movie Trading Places for the first time in forever.  Dan Aykroyd has a line when he's being escorted from the club where he says something like "This is preposterous!"  Anyway, it got me thinking what a great word "preposterous" is and how I should use it more.  I started trying to think of a word that would sound good with it in a song title and I liked the ring of "Preposterous Hypothesis".  Little did I know Flight of the Conchords had already beaten me to the punch on that one.

Thanks!  The intro part was actually the very first thing I came up with (doesn't always work that way despite being the first thing you hear).  The rest of the song was built outward from that.

The synth part during the verse is a flute sound on the iris2 virtual synth, which I then ran through ValhallaFreqEcho.
