Ornithopter

By Cosmic Cairns on February 7, 2024 8:51 pm

This track takes its seeds from the lyrics of last week's track.  That one was based on a dream I had in which I was flying over rock formations in a canyon.  I included a line about flying, but I didn't specify how I was flying.  In the dream it was based on I think I was either flying of my own volition or I was in a small airplane.  Both of those are cool, but I thought it might be a more interesting image if I were in an ornithopter, which is basically an aircraft that mimics the flapping of a bird's wings.  They're more theoretical than practical in real life.  Leonardo Da Vinci famously designed one, but never built it.  But since this is my imagination, I've got a sophisticated fully functioning one and in this week's track I take it out for a spin.

I never thought I'd see such things
Looking round as I take wing
In my ornithopter
As it soars through the crystal clear air

Ancient forests stretch below
Frosted with new fallen snow
On a mountain range
Somewhere that no one ever goes
In a corner of the world that no one even knows

The empty plains and sweeping hills
And only wind disturbs the still
My ornithopter sails along
I listen for the Earth's pure song
That rings out everywhere if you're open to it
Tones of healing energy always pulsing through it
All around the world

Ornithopter flap away
Straight into the dawning day
Join the birds
And see what all there is to see out there

Shimmering seas and emerald coasts
Clouds connected by rainbows
Follow a path
Laid out by one solitary sunray
Lighting up the sky and singing
What a glorious morning

i never knew about ornithopters until now!
got that high-flying feeling i love in so many of your songs, perfectly suited smile
especially love the way the instrumental interlude/solo surges to climax into a return to the vocals, i can feel the ornithopter doing barrel rolls through canyons of delight and excitement into newer parts of the song big_smile

Oh hell yeah, would love to fly in that thing.

Nice work with this one, lots of very cool parts in here.  The horns and synths are great, especially digging the synth with the weird rhythmic thing going on.

Now I wanna see Arnold yell "Get to da ornithopta!" That is a sweet ride yikes  Oooh really dig the brassy and synthy flared sections.  One of them sounds like it could power the ornithopter.  Def gave me the happy sunny flying vibes especially with the triumphant guitar strums.

This are very good lyrics, vocals and instrumentals. I had so much fun listening to your excellent guitarsolos, like I had, when I was a early „pavement“ listener. Great track.

Thanks!  It would be super cool to see the ornithopter doing crazy maneuvers through a canyon, but it's fun to imagine it, too.

Thanks!  I had fun assembling the sounds on this one.

Thanks!  A little brass and synth is never a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

Pavement was definitely a favorite of mine back in the day.  I'm sure I've picked up some influences from them.

i really like your voice and the way you put melodies together. this was great!

Hooray for the imaginary ornithopter and this happy soaring song! I like the different treatments on the voice you use in a few places. Great lyrics. Nice ending with all the sounds, really sounds like flying along! I'm imagining flying around in one now too and my day is better, so thanks for this. My flying dreams are rare these days, I wish I could train my brain to have them more.

Hahaha i could imagine a version of the Dune movie with your music as the soundtrack. it would have to be done with a very different artistic direction than Villeneuve or Lynch's versions of course. Maybe something steampunk, in a collage style animation not unlike Monty Python. One of your magic pop songs!

This feels super uplifting (pun partially intended)! The lyrics are also lovely, great job!!! heart

This is so much fun! Very evocative and dream like. Love it heart

nice wide sound, love it!

Great stereo acoustic guitar sound and vocals! Your 2024 mixes are sounding so good! Much improved from the happy pie tin mic technique days. Rock on!

Neat, I've never heard of an Ornithopter before. Whacky concept. Lot of great stuff going on here, really appreciate the journey and evolving tonal palette throughout.

I seem to have flying dreams decently often.  A lot of times I'll just kind of notice I can pick both my feet up without having to put them down and the next thing I know I'm soaring around.  They're pretty cool.  Kind of wish I'd have them even more often.

Ornithopters are a pretty big part of Dune for sure.  They did a pretty cool job with them in the last movie.  Definitely a bit of a different tonal feel though.

Thank you!  I've been trying to lean into some dream imagery so far this year.

Thanks!  I've definitely leveled up my production game over the past few years.  Seems like there's always more to learn and room to improve, but it's pretty cool to be able to look back and see some tangible progress.

They're more of a theory than a reality, but they're a pretty neat concept nonetheless.  Thanks for listening!

Whatever that lead thing is that's freaking out in the middle, I like that.
Good stuff.

That's probably the microkorg making some freaky sounds.
