Minor Miracle

Another attempt to spotlight the cello a little bit.  Most of the percussion is even cello with just a bit of highlighting with a popcorn tin.  Otherwise laid down a bit of acoustic guitar and vocals and called it a song.  Hope you enjoy!

More than a song, it's a good song. Nice job with the cello and the vocal harmonies!

Nice tune. I like the cello and the vocals with the acoustic it has sort of a twenty-second century Shenandoah valley flavor. (I know we aren’t there yet - well some of us haven’t been, but that’s a different conversation)  very good.

You can probably highlight it even more by reducing the guitar to just one strum per bar when the cello comes in.

Beautiful blending of cello and vocals. Needs more popcorn tin, maybe a solo smile Is that bass line that emerges in the second half of the song also on cello?

Thanks!  It's always nice to hear a song is "good" smile  Also I put most of the work into the cello and vocal harmonies so thanks for mentioning them.  smile

Thanks!  I like that description "twenty-second century Shenandoah valley flavor.  Might have to use that somehow.  smile

That's a good idea.  Might have to give it a try.  The only instruments used were cello and acoustic guitar.  Well, and of course popcorn tin.  smile

You can always turn up the popcorn tin.  Yeah, the bass line is cello, bowed at some parts and plucked at others.

And your voice, of course. That's definitely instrumental in this composition.

True, I sometimes think of vocals being separate from instruments, but really they are an instrument too.  That line about the instruments used was actually supposed to be in response to NWSPR's comment... not sure how it ended up there.  Oops.  Here I'll try again...

Very nice! Cello is a winner. I'd vote for more popcorn tin perhaps.

Thanks!  I'm sure the popcorn tin will appear more before the year is over.  smile

this one grows very nicely as it builds up. The tin sounds fine smile

Hey thanks!  Yeah, I tried to add just a touch more cello on each verse.  And gotta love the tin!  smile

After reading the part about reducing the guitar to fewer strums, I listened again. Instead of fewer strums how about random fingerpicking. Meaning not a bass to treble arpeggio or a strictly up and down eighth note or triplet thing but a random whatever fits thing.

That would probably actually be a really good idea, but I'm not too skilled at finger picking.  I might have to bring in a ringer for that.  smile

Great work on the cello, as well as the other instruments, but the cello is the star of this song for me. And of course the popcorn tin!

Thanks!  Yeah the cello is the star for me, too.  Although that popcorn tin gives it a good run for the money.  smile

It’s easier than you think if you don’t think about it too much.

Yeah I probably should try it some more.  I also broke my middle finger on my pickin' hand about a year ago and while it is much better it still doesn't feel "normal."  I think it might hinder me a little bit.  But I shouldn't let it stop me from at least trying.  smile

Love the vocal harmonies in this, especially in contrast with the guitar strums and cello.  Wouldn't have known that was a popcorn tin because it almost sounds like a stick on the edge of a snare a bit.  Nice work!

Probably, I know how difficult it is to overcome hand injuries. I had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands years ago and it took awhile to overcome it. Now my left hand has the bulk of my arthritis so I’m not even close to as fluid or as fast as I used to be. My right hand (picking) is pretty stiff also. I originally taught myself to fingerpick and learned using all 4 fingers like Fernando Sor instead of just 3 like Segovia. I didn’t know that at the time, I was just a young and stupid professional guitarist trying to get better.

Thanks!  Some of the percussion is also provided by the actual body of the cello, so it's not all popcorn tin.

Yeah I was hoping my finger would be pretty much close to normal after a few months, but now I'm not sure if it ever will be.  I came close to cutting the tip completely off and there are a lot of nerves in that area so it's pretty dang sensitive still.
