Katydid

By Cosmic Cairns on November 20, 2024 7:20 pm

I think as I've gotten older fall has become my favorite season of the year and I decided to write some lyrics for this one that often suggested autumn imagery more so than making literal sense.  I also utilized some recordings of windchimes I made on my phone.

Hands in the soil
Keys unlatch the pumpkin patch
Tea kettles a-boil
Apples bloom and thunder booms

Gray clouds roll in
Sheets of rain pour down again
Deep puddles begin
To turn dirt red as they spread

Katydid come creeping crawling out
Amid the crops and fields of hay
Slither by the scarecrow scream and shout
Katydid not know the way

Copper leaves fall
All around the dusty ground
As they hear the call
Seasons turn and bonfires burn

Breeze starts to blow
Currents swirl weave and whirl
Candles all aglow
Soft warm light all through the night

Bees zoom through the orchard heading back
Honey dripping in the hive
Out behind the old abandoned shack
Chrysanthemums and zinnias thrive

As the first frost
Settles down on quiet towns
Nothing has been lost
Some things go so new things grow

World still spins
On its axis it relaxes
It is time again
Nature changes rearranges

Earthworms burrow deep inside the dirt
Waiting for their time to shine
All the does and chipmunks stay alert
Overhead the stars align

fall is great! Dig the wordplay, katydid not know the way. the windchime bridge was excellent. fun fall tune

This probably was not easy to sing, but you did it excellently, as far I can judge. It is a beautiful melody and a lovely orchestral composition. The chimes gave a nice touch to the song. I had to look up  for Katydid, now I know a word more. Thanks.

I swear I was thinking that exactly last week. "when did i start enjoying fall?" was my thought last week, with the beautiful leave colors, striking sunsets, the air become crisper (and making it much easier to go for a run without risking dehydration).

Those bells at 1:24! It feels like being in a Christmas market, or sitting in the grass with cows around. Or maybe both! Sitting at a Christmas market withs cows. And you finish the track by inverting it, taking us directly into psychedelic territory.

Your music brings Joy. I love how the wind chimes are in the same key...so good! Thank you for this wonderful track! Fall is the best. Agreed!

We share a favourite season! Something about the cool weather, the heat leaving the sunlight, the colours, wood heat starting up again, and everything else. I think your lyrics convey the spirit for sure! I really like the wind chimes, especially at the end where they are chiming in reverse too, really trippy effect!

a very happy vibe! This also has a real 60´s feeling to it. Very heartfelt and uplifting. That keyboard sound in the back carries the track very nicely indeed. The windchimes are ace, too...

your fantastic melody plus those wind chimes is such a winning combination.
LOVE

Fall is a great time, I grew up on the east coast of the US ad do miss the fall season, brings back many fond memories.

Such a happy fall feeling especially with those calming chimes.  Impossible not to nod along to this uplifting groovy song.  Love the outro.  Well done!

Thanks!  Couldn't resist that bit of wordplay.

I think it's kind of a regional term for a grasshopper, I don't really use it that frequently, but I do like the sound of the word.  Thanks for listening!

I actually was at a Christmas market last year when I recorded those chimes on my phone.  It's funny that it gives you that image.  I actually forgot all about the recording I made of them until I was just sort of flipping through my phone recordings and found them again.

The same key thing was a happy accident!  I recorded those chimes almost a year ago and I already recorded the main part of the song before I thought to try to use them and somehow they sounded really good when I just slid them right in there.

I'm a sucker for reversed effects.  Especially with sounds I don't use too often, I'm always curious to hear what they sound like backwards.

Thanks!  I can see the 60's feel.  The keyboard part was kind of subtle, but I do think it's important to the track.

I'm really happy with how the windchimes turned out considering I recorded them on my phone.  These phone recorders do seem like they're getting better.

I'll bet you had some stunning falls on the East coast.  I went to college in Illinois and it could be a little hit or miss.  Some years there was stunning fall foliage, and some years not so much.  Not too much fall colors where I am now, but I always appreciate the cooling off after the summers, which just seem to be getting hotter every year.

The whole outro thing was a bit of a whim, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out.  Happy fall!

Fall is special. This song is special. Head bobbing happy, I love the imagery, I like the little images that pop up. Keys unlocking pumpkin patch and earth worms doing things, many great fall images. Love the chimes, love the outro, a great way to end, its like winter coming in a way.

The promise of winter is always there in the fall, but I definitely like taking a moment and just savoring its own particular flavor.
