Hapax Legomenon

By Cosmic Cairns on December 5, 2024 1:38 am

I was playing around with a free online text analyzer recently and learned something new.  A hapax legomenon is a word or term that only appears one time in a text.  I liked the ring of it, so decided to use it as a song title.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Scrolling through the book of the world
Looking for an answer I think I found it
It only appears there one time
So easy for your eyes to pass all around it

And miss the point
Of this sad joint

Don't forget to bookmark the page
It would be a shame to so quickly lose it
Protect it from the scum of the Earth
And anybody out there who would abuse it

So many would
Claim to be good

Misguided fools of the highest sort
Armed with their most fervent wishes and caravans
Of believers in their righteousness and holiness
Run it all into the ground

In all the billions of pages I've searched
Nothing ever jumped out that was quite like it
But some foolish editor seems
To have come along once and tried to strike it

From the record
Seemed to absurd

I continue skimming along
Hoping somewhere else there's a different story
Lost in the deep pages of time
Maybe to be unearthed in an old quarry

Encased in stone
Keys to the throne

Great melodies and superb energy in this track. It is very catchy! I'd play the radio while on a long ride through the desert (never done that but that sounds like a fun trope), and could imagine ending on this track being played on the radio at 5am, as the sun is rising. And this feels just perfect.

You're a lyrical master. I don't know how you come up with these lyrics so fast. Love how you took the story and wrote a whole tune around it. The tune is GREAT.

Wonderful fuzzy guitarsound and a beautiful lyric idea you brought together. Very well done.

oh wow, this was such a fun trip!
i had to giggle at
"pass all around it" leading to "this sad joint"  big_smile

this tune dips into that "what if TMBG were an Elephant 6 band?" vibe that you are so good at conjuring. another strong CC melody!

speaking of E6, i was sad to read about Will Cullen Hart passing recently. i thought of you. i'm guessing you read it, but if not - Robert Schneider's tribute is worth looking up. so sad, but what a legacy.

hope this week has been better for you and your family.  heart

Totally agree with SQF, you come up with some awesome lyrical lines and make it seem easy each week smile  The guitars sound awesome in this.  Love the grungy fuzzy feel of it.  "Encased in stone.  Keys to the throne" \m/

I'm going to have to add onto the comments about how impressed I am at coming up with lyrics on top of the awesome accompaniment. There is definitely a TMBG feel to this and I love it all! wink

Suitable amount of fuzz, really enjoyed this!

I like the association of the sunrise in the desert.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!  Tracks with lyrics definitely take me longer to write than instrumentals, but I've got my process down where I can churn them out relatively fast, albeit with a little bit of second guessing and beating my head against the wall along the way.  smile

Thanks!  I did read Robert Schneider's tribute to Will Cullen Hart and was saddened to hear of his passing.  Extra sad that both of the main forces behind Olivia Tremor Control went so young.  I listened to some Circulatory System this week as well in his honor.  WCH was truly capable of making some unreal sounds.  I watched an interview with him semi-recently on YouTube.  It was interesting, but hard to follow at times, partially because he sort of has a mumbly way of talking and also says "you know" a real lot (I know he suffered from MS and that may have contributed to that), but it was also obvious his mind works in a very unusual way.  I'm really glad to have gotten to listen to his music.

It isn't always easy, but I suppose the trick is making it look that way.  smile  It is good to have a way to put that old English degree to good use.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!  I didn't set out to go for a TMBG vibe necessarily, but I listened to them enough back in the day that they've surely infiltrated my DNA.
