Press Check

Here's another 160 bpm deep d&b thing.

I haven't been super content with these drums. I was originally attempting to put something together from scratch with my DMX VST and finally got something acceptable dialed in this morning. That was after I added some compression on the snare. There's a sampled break layer sitting on top of the DMX hits that also finally got things a bit more cohesive and added some forward motion. I still hear a lot of mud though. The track title is an homage to the break sample source.

I had a lot more fun with the other elements this week. The arpping doodle in the middle of the tune needs some tweaki,ng but the general framework I was going for is there. I was farting around with erratic playing then tightening up with quantize to mimic faint memories of an 80s era Casio keyboard. Overall this needs more engineering to get some separation between the elements. I'm not sure If I love this enough to put the work in for that though. TBD. More importantly, week 20 is complete.

Ooh the bass is so funky and contrasts wonderfully with the beat.  The melodic elements are cohesive and bring everything together.

Ooof those intricate drum fills are awesome!  The bongo percussion excellent! DMX Snare so nice!  The bass line is hypnotic as it dances with the drums.  I think this track is def worthy of revisiting but it sounds great as it is.  I hear ya on the separation part but the overall awesomeness is there \m/

The drums are cool, the percussive drums in there give it a tribal sound. Even if you didn’t fully mix this down there’s plenty in there that could be lifted for a future track. Sounds nice as is still

Someone ran a little vacuum cleaner behind me while I was listening to this and There Was A Moment, because your song is so sonically dynamic that it really seemed to fit right in. I particularly love the fog horn/hoover, but also I really enjoyed some of the trance elements that come into play and make this really mysterious mood (yes I am listening to too much trance). If you come back to this, or take some of these ideas elsewhere, I'd be curious to see how some heavily processed trance-like vocals would fit into the mix, its a great track already heart

Does it count if I press play on Press Check?
Either way, very glad I did. 😊
