Writer's Block

By blighters_rock on February 20, 2022 11:55 pm

My lyrics ended up being about how much I was dreading writing this week.

If you bang your head against a wall for long enough, eventually you'll break through. If your head is hard enough.

I've been working my ass off all day today to get this recorded and finished, so my ears are tired and I've lost all perspective on the mix. If only I'd start these things on Friday, maybe I could just mix on Sunday. Wouldn't that be nice?

Lyrics:

I just can't shake this feeling of gloom
Feeling like something's wrong, I don't know what to do
I spiral deeper, closer to dread
Fear of the unknown, or not knowing, or not said

The fear of never knowing what to do
When the walls are caving in inside my room

I'm wound so tight that I can't shut my eyes
Waiting for sleep to take me under into the night
I chase my fear to the back of my head
But when morning comes it starts all over again

The fear of never knowing what to do
The walls are caving in inside
my room is crashing down
I'm falling through

This is giving me some King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard vibes and I'm loving it, the vocals kind of remind of Tenacious D styled melodies too, and a little bit of Kansas in the post chorus break (which I especially love). I know that stress all too well, but at least you got good results this week.

Dude fuck yeah, this is awesome.  Very well performed and produced.  The guitar leads are so kick ass, they add so much and totally carry this song.  Love the vocals on this too, that constant half note rhythm is really powerful on the chorus.  Well done, this is great.  Also, is it an accident that it rhymes with your name?

"If you bang your head against a wall for long enough, eventually you'll break through. If your head is hard enough."

Maybe? or you can try to climb over it?

I love the straight 6-8 rock n roll. Very well done this week, and you start that late on the week? Pretty impressed.

The lyrics can be taken in many ways from the listener perspective, and we can all relate so I think it is a winner there.

The bass line and guitars with drums fits great together. I quite like the super compressed snare drums.

Solid stuff.

Doctor Who Vibes on that great tone in the first guitar melody! Soaring and super. Love these ones that you feel were rushed but your head must be fully hardened, cause you totally broke through that wall. Awesome work

I didn't get the Kansas vibe until you pointed it out to me yday, but yeah, totally get that now in the bridge section. These are all big compliments, so thank you!

Heh no accident! I started doing WB to get over a multi-year case of writer's block, and so the name I chose was a spoonerism of writer's block. Thanks for the kind words! I was a little scared at first that the chorus bit was too plain to be interesting, but once the bass and harmonies were recorded I felt good about it too.

Glad you're diggin it. My WB journey so far has really been about forcing myself to press forward on a riff or idea that I'm not completely comfortable with, to develop and mold it into something I do like. For a long time I've been musically unproductive because I'm waiting for the perfect riff to present itself instead of hammering away at something less than ideal until I like it. And that's what I mean about banging my head against the wall until I break through.

Oooh nice. I was sorta going for a little bit of an eery, spacey sort of vibe with the pitch bender on the guitar. Mission accomplished, I think. Thanks so much.

Damn this is good. Enjoying hearing something new from you. As a couple others have commented, that opening lead guitar line is eerie spacey and I can see the King Gizzard comparison. I really dig it. I like the rhythmic changes in here too. That you managed something like this by starting on Friday is impressive and motivating! Great stuff

Yesterday I listened to an old CD of a band called Spitfire. You might like it. this is a very cool solid song you did. respect.

Don't worry, the mix is fantastic. Any change to it would make a completely different song. The point of WB is to not think too deeply about it though, you don't fight a writer's block in a week, you simply stop giving a damn.

lol i'd pay money to have written a song this good and this is your "writer's block" song.  amazing.

i might increase the guitars .7 dB and decrease the vocals .6 dB but everything sounds so clear - the recording quality makes the mix less important to me.

the BREAKDOWN

god, you are so good, i seriously want to go to a Blighters_Rock show and scream the lyrics in the front row

Thanks! I was dreading it, but I definitely got in the zone on this one and got really excited to keep pushing.

Thanks, I'll check 'em out.

Ooof... I was almost there on the mix. Somehow I accidentally squashed my guitar bus to mono. Thanks for the feedback. My goal is to find a way to force myself into creative mode rather than waiting for inspiration to dawn on me, and this is positive results IMO.

You, as always, are too kind! I feel like my mixing is improving, with the rather large caveat that I accidentally squashed my guitar bus to mono before bouncing this. Didn't realize it till a friend pointed it out to me the next day. Front row seats and backstage passes for orangedrink! Thanks for listening, cheers!

The mono guitar provides a nice foundation tho, a stable constant

super solid drumming and feel on this! would be super cool to hear this performed live.

Thanks! This one definitely makes it on the album, with some tweaking and re-recording. I'm super happy with it, though.
