Quick mix on this one, ran out of time.

Having a hard time doubling my voice without it sounding phasey. Any ideas?

› Lyrics

Embrace the phase, brother. (I only say that because I double my voice and don't bother to fix the phasing, haha).
Dude the effects on those guitars sound rad. Is it just reverb or some kind of delay? It sounds very clear and in the forefront but also very spacious and moody.
Rad hooks and production. It's cool to see your pop-punk side coming out stronger and stronger with each new track.

Pretty impressive this is what running out of time sounds like. Dialed dude

I like this a lot! I didn't really notice any phasing of the vocals, probably because the riffs and lyrics are so good I was too busy rocking out to notice. Really nice guitar solo at the end as well. Great work! Definitely going to listen to this one more!

uuu I really like the effects on solo part, vocals sound great for me... running out of time?? damn!!  smile

Awesome guitar sounds.  Especially liked the solo.  Vocals sound good, too.  The phase is kind of cool.

Another banger!

“I tell my mom I’m having fun” 😆 what a gem

Love the way that intro / lead guitar sits over the rhythm

Great track again, I actually like the mix a lot, very clear. Lots of nice stuff on the top end. Since there are not tons of elements and it has been quite a bit of tracks done on this style, your go-to for your instruments works pretty good.

There is a tool that synchro art sells that is pretty killer to align vocals. You can use just stretch audio as well to "tighten up" vocals.

Killer tone on the solo, if you hadn't mentioned vocal phasing I wouldn't have noticed it, sounds good to me. Something about the solo reminded me of "No Rain" by Blind Melon and also "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult. It doesn't sound anything like either of those songs but they both popped in my head for some reason. Awesome work as usual.

Love it, definitely 90s sitcom vibes for me smile

For the vocals: do you record multiple takes or use a delay?

Another winner. There are several good hooks in this one. The guitar had a good bite to it. The harmonies are really good. It's hard (for me anyway) to make a 2nd harmonize well like that. Nice job! The 3 (4?) part harmony just before 2:30 is spot on. Good job and sound on the solo too. Keep 'em coming!

So good! This sound brings me back to high school, amazing job!

Mostly delay. Little bit of ambience reverb as well. Honestly, the solo was just not impacting as hard as everything else so I started turning up all the knobs until it fit better.

Thanks! I definitely spent time on it, but didn't have time to give it a proper airpods and car test

Thanks much. Yeah I finished and submitted 3 mins before deadline yikes

Lol yeah I wrote that line and wasn't sure if it was too cringe, but I kept it because it made me laugh

Thanks much! I recently bought vocalign! Didn't have time to use it this week, but I don't know that it really does anything for phase, anyway. More for timing, right?

Maybe the sauce was made with the same ingredients? Thanks

Multiple takes almost always. For this one there is a bit of delay on the main vox to fatten them, though, because the dubs just sounded bad.

If I hard pan the doubles I can kinda get away with it (e.g. final chorus), but it sounds shit when collapsed to mono. Besides, I sometimes want a center panned double with other stuff on the sides. I wonder if EQing them differently will help.

Thanks for listening!

Such a nice song big_smile very current day problem lyrics! I like the vocal harmony at the end of lines! The doubling sounds indeed similar and phasey, maybe you just have to do the second voice a bit "worse" musically speaking so together they sound thicker? I don't know how to do it, but again the parts with vocal harmonies are soo nice.

Very tight guitar and drums too! Today I listened with the phone so no comment on the mix except that it still rocks at low volume big_smile

congrats, sounds great!

Wow dude. This is more melodic than most of your other songs. I like it a lot.

This sounds great!

Such a feel good track. You should tour with Blink 182.

Heyo, you've got a unique sound.
Me from the other room: "Oh, is that blighters_rock?"
Yes it was! Thanks for the fun track!

Oh, I don't know about phase though. Have you tried inverting the phase on one or the other track? Or is that more of a drums thing??

Nice work! I actually thought the phasing sounded cool when the doubles kick in, it wasn't extreme (at least in headphones, might sound different on a mono speaker but i suspect it's ok).
I use a panning plugin from Boz called Pan Knob 2 that I absolutely love. It has an adjustable crossover so you can center low frequencies while panning higher frequencies out, and there is also a delay section built in that I found really helpful when panning. For example - with vocal doubles I might have my main vocal straight down the middle then pan the double slightly (maybe 3 - 7%). Then I will solo both vocals and adjust the double's level until I like where it is sitting. Once the volume feels right I will slowly adjust the delay on the double. I'm always amazed at how subtle moves like that can really bring things into focus.
Some other tricks I'll try are using a different EQ setting on the double (often a lo-fi preset or just something that takes up less space), or adding some tube or tape saturation.
Ymmv!

everything nicely in its place, song resonates with the times too smile

jwh dealin the mixin knowledge above... Not that I know anything about mixing vocals lol.  But what he said def made sense.  I honestly didn't hear it as an issue here and def wasn't thinking of shit when I heard it wink  Love the energy throughout especially the harmonies.  m0r plez smile

fun diddy! brings me back to smoking cigs in my delta 88 to the skate park. Keep it up bud

Yes, enjoying this, perked up my morning better than the coffee. Vocals sound good, didn't notice phasing issues. Guitar solid. I like the lyrics, I can relate!

Thanks! I kept several other doubles out because the phase was too much to bear, though. Haha worse... yeah, I can do worse wink I'll give it a try

Thanks! As I was writing I realized I was retreading the same old three note melodies I always do, so I reached for some new ones.

Flipping phase didn't change much , thanks for the idea, though!

Thanks for the recommendations. Looking into that plugin. I'm guessing when you're talking about delaying the double, you don't mean like a delay plugin, but literally nudging the region to find the most pleasing phase alignment. That is such an obvious idea that I wish I thought of. I'm going to copy down these notes so I have them for next time I'm mixing vox. Really appreciate the comments and insight.

Yeah, looking forward to trying those ideas next time. Thanks for listening!

yup, it's similar to nudging! one of the things i like about that PanKnob plugin is the delay function is built into the plugin (see image below). so you can adjust the panning and delay incrementally while just having one plugin open and kinda hear when it comes into focus. the delays are pretty minimal, but it's cool to hear how even going from 1ms to 3ms on a vocal double that is panned @ 3 to 7% can help it sit better.
*one note - i never have the x-over set that high as i'm mainly using it to keep the low-lows centered, so typically i have it set from the 100 to 250hz range.
ps: someone who actually knows what they are talking about might think i'm off track, but i've found this works well to my ears!
cheers

lol it's phasey because you are too good at singing accurately 2x in a row.  be less good and then it'll work.

try taking on a vocal style for each take.  do a clean one, and then do a "gritty one" or do one leaning back posture-wise.  it'll switch up your voices for sure.

(i'm assuming doubling means singing twice, not copying and pasting the same take)

THANK YOU FOR THE NOISE ENDING

this song was awesome.

So many elements of this are crazy catchy!

Awesome work for a quick mix, sounds great.  Very big.  Excellent song too.

I like that idea about taking up a "style" for each take. Will give this a shot. And yes, doubling for me is always extra tracks. Thanks!
