Sea of souls

By BarristerPlong on January 17, 2026 3:17 pm

Bunch of M8 sketches left me uninspired this week. Decided to break free of structure and create chaos instead.
This is my minifreak and my katana into Ableton with a healthy dollop of Valhalla supermassive.

Bring the chaos!  Very cool track.  Menacing and ominous.  A bit of Sunno vibe with the downtuned guitar too.

Whoa!

Deep, dense. Menacing.

It sounds huge, and while many of the tones give me the feeling of constantly rising tension, there's something oddly soothing about letting yourself just float in the drone.

woah foghorn delight! i love the developing background textures peeking out from behind the massive doomfuzz hell yeah. as everyone mentioned in chat, this doesn't feel like 6 minutes, it somehow goes by faster?? THE OUTRO

I just discovered Supermassive last week - it’s like finding your secret weapon! Super inspiring to hear what you’re doing with it here. Love how this feels like a flow of energy that’s barely holding together - that chaos you talked about is straining to break loose.

To echo scottux - THE OUTRO. What an ending.

Nice pairing with the art! Perfect synergy.

Very sophisticated ambience and textures. Well done!

ooof such a thick menacing sound and love the strings and especially the floating outro heart

Woah...accurate title is accurate! This feels thick and ominous.

Oh man, what an interesting resolution to all that tension built up through out the track! It ends with such a distinct "ok we can breath" moment, very cool track.

Very cool. I feel like I'm hearing lots of tiny decisions that add up to a really powerful effect. There's some sound that keeps bending up slightly in pitch so that it just starts to beat...and then it resets. Great little ongoing relief in the middle of all the thick and dark tension.

THICK. I love this stuff. I know its challenging to work dynamics across a whole album of this style of ambient but you really should try, its right up there with some of my fave Cryo Chamber compilations, Drony Darko vibes!

Downtuned guitars with distortion is my happy place. This is my 7 string in drop A.

You can't fight it. Let it flow over you and through you. Only you will remain.

20 minute version incoming.
I love the little sparkles at the end. You made it. You are safe.

It's such an incredible reverb. If something like it existed in pedal format I would throw all my other reverbs in the garbage. It turns patches on my minifreak into gargantuan soundscapes. It's just incredible.
The guitar was just playing A and the octave above it. Gradually throughout the song I'd start pulling the octave out of tune more and more creating oscillations in the fuzz making tension.

Thicker than a bowl of oatmeal.

It's a 'You made it. You're okay.' moment after 6 non stop minutes of tension.

That pitch bend is the guitar, I'm playing A and the octave above and slowly bending the octave out of tune more and more throughout the track, then resetting before it peaks and repeating. The feeling of reality shaking apart but pulling itself back together.

I am definitely thinking about it. Next weeks has already ventured in the same lines.

Fulgrim demands more screaming.
- Spider

I pictured myself playing some RPG / Action Adventure where I am running through a mostly deserted wasteland and/or desert. Absolutely perfect sound for this

I WANT TO HEAR THIS IN A BASEMENT SO LOUD IT SHAKES MY TEETH

do you know of the band Kowloon Walled City?
they don't really sound like this, but i think they tune down to A (or as they say, tuned down to stupid)  big_smile
this is the One for me:
https://kowloonwalledcity.bandcamp.com/ … iner-ships

anyway. see you in the basement heart

that image fits perfectly.
Event Horizon bad ending, Factorio on a hellish world, a sparkle of hope, or, acceptence.
100% vibes!

The dark sea rising! Yes perfect title. Intense journey!

Thank you for listening! It's desolate and barren for sure.

Thank you! It's just a quick jaunt through hell in an ancient ship? What could possibly go wrong?

Hell yeah. Thank you!

Love it, all you need sometimes, so much texture and depth created from the few tools you used, close your eyes and just take it in.

Yeah, I hear you man. That happens to me very, very frequently.
I like what you got to here! The heavy distortion sounds like someone just angrily but pensively messing around with their guitar. Super cool! The minifreak seems like a cool tool for out of the box explorations.

Today I drowned in the sea of souls, and I loved it.

I always try and think through the lens of what I can do on my own live. It leads me to be creative with how big I can make each individual instrument.

Well that's just me on the guitar period. The minifreak is absolutely wild. It's my companion synth to my M8. It can create evocative soundscapes from single key presses. It's wild.

Low A.... the same tuning as the death metal band I play in.

A is pretty damn low.  So good for the doom.

Thank you for listening! Don't forget your towel.

It's just so huge with distortion. A sonic landscape on its own.

Echoing the Doom Ambiant vibes here ... and the drowning in a thick sea of burdened souls, total annihilation... but then I was rebirthed

I have to download all of your tracks wtf...
