Funeral of Saint Drusus

By BarristerPlong on February 1, 2026 8:02 pm

I was way too ambitious this week and ran into big walls with several tracks which are gonna take more time to hash out. It was a little humbling frankly discouraging so I went back to my trusty minifreak and made something pensive and somber.
It's a generative patch that has a bass oscillator that stays put for a nice drone and a lead oscillator that's tuned to a min 9 scale and it's pitch is dictated by a random LFO that resets after every note. There's a lot more going on there then just that, but it's the jist.
That generative patch is then accompanied by a vocal patch adding some somber chants and a violin patch matching that vocal cadence at different intervals. Oh and noise for fire crackles. All done on the minifreak and Ableton.
It came out very pensive with a hint of a silent honor being given and it became the Funeral of Saint Drusus to continue with my 40k theming.

If I can figure out a way to post my minifreak patches I'll start doing that, same with my M8 bundles.

As a backup plan this excels. I am locked in. Glad to hear this as my first dip into week 5 subs.

Definitely experienced the ole "whoops this was a very ambitious 1 week project" before and had to pivot. I love the sounds you have here and am very inspired you got all of this from just a minifreak. Makes me want to bust mine out again.

An epic drone with a somber vibe.  Before I read the description I was noticing the crackling noise in the background.  It's subtle, but adds a nice touch.

Wonderful textures and overall vibe.  I feel like I am exploring a barren alien landscape

Drusus sounds like a rather dreary chap.

Solid ambiance, well thought. It develops at the right pace. Where is that reverb coming from?

As soon as tis started, my brain went "oh yeah, this is gonna be good". And it didn't lie.
Fantastic work!!! Very ominous and solemn. Perfect sonic accompaniment to the cover image in your post!

echoing jegasus' comment, the second i heard the drone i settled right in. love how it flares out a bit at times.  the deep gravely tone of it sounds so good. well done! so glad you and your brother joined wb in 24! \m/

Aside from my M8, the Minifreak is my only synthesizer. It's incredible what you can get out of it. I love making krell patches on it. Thank you!

Thank you! I really felt the crackles being immediate and light on the reverb was grounding in the midst of this giant cathedral awash in echos.

Thanks! The reverb is from the Valhalla Supermassive plugin in ableton. It's free and I use it extensively. Extremely musical and transformative.

keep being you, we love it.

It's amazing how something so dark can sound beautiful at the same time. Love it!

Such a rich layering of sounds! I find this very calming as a whole. At the same time, I really appreciate the little moments of tension that keep it interesting. Would love a longer version someday!

really nice, deep and lush for sure. Loved it.

This evolves beautifully. Looking forward to the compilation smile

Always love me some broody ambient sounds. I felt like playing an isometric Cyberpunk RPG while listening to this

Thank you! I'll often make generative tracks quantized to a pentatonic leaving it emotional but vague so it's a canvas to paint on with a lead using the minor key, adding the desired resolution of emotion and release. Ambient definitely feels a lot like painting.

Thank you! I am planning on making a collection of my 40k ambient tracks in long play format. When I've built up enough of them this year I'm gonna try and get that out there.
