Missing You

Really left this one to the 11th hour, but luckily this weekend it's Easter holiday in Australia, so I was able to finish this off Monday morning.

I've been having some excellent musical experiences lately, and some of these have filtered through into this track. Notable influences are the music of Kiasmos, my deepening relationship with reverb (it looks like it's going to be a serious, committed relationship), and my discovery of multiband compression. Game changer! I spent way too much time applying it to everything.

These last few weeks I've been really enjoying finding new ways to refine the sounds. I keep coming back to the same techniques. One thing I'm continually unhappy with though, is my bass sounds. I can't get the bass to sound good! It sounds very different from my speakers to my headphones, I can't predict it. I took advantage of an Easter sale to snap up a pair of monitor speakers I've been eyeing for a while. They should arrive this week. Hopefully they'll help!

Tools were: Ableton Live 9, Roland FP-50 digital piano and a touch of Roland Gaia. Kinda regret the Gaia now.

Lovely track, really has a noticeable sense of depth to it. I have a similar problem when mixing bass, or anything really. It'll sound fine to me in my home with my headphones on, but once I get it on a speaker it becomes a disaster.
In any case, your bass sounds fine to me, you did a really nice job here. This is the type of music I'd like to make, I think.

What a lovely thing to say, thank you!

Yeah I run into that sometimes, too, where things sound completely different in the headphones and the speakers.  It can be frustrating sometimes.  But this song sounds really nice.  It gives me a little bit of an underwater feel for some reason.  I like the beat a lot, too.

Very lovely, but it could be romantic with reduced drums.

Very nice! I think the mellow feel works well with the more upbeat drums.
I'm not always able to use my monitors in my home studio, so I know the feeling when what sounded good in headphones just sounds wrong on speakers.
Bass sounds good to me here, though. But I am listening on headphones.

Love that reverb applied to the kick. You got a really good handle on mixing. Everything is in it's own pocket with lots of space. Why you regretting the Gaia? Also, bass sounds decent. Good work!
