This is a sad one. Read on only if you are ok with the sads.

Ok? Here we go:

This week we said goodbye to our oldest cat, Aki, who was 17, who very suddenly took a turn on Monday, and we put him to rest on Thursday, at home with us.

We'd kind of suspected this year would be his last, but it still hit me like an absolute ton of bricks, and I've had a lump in my throat every day since.

I didn't think I'd be up for making a track, but after a day or so, it felt almost like the right thing to do. Weekly Beats is almost a diary for me in many ways, I often remember the sights, sounds, smells and feelings when listening back to older tracks.

In fact, Aki has featured underneath several of my tracks over the years, but damn I can't remember which ones, I'm sure I'll find one eventually. Anyway.. the track is short, and I tried to capture the sadness and joy in owning a brilliant animal, a true companion over the years, but also I really didn't want to overcook, or outstay its welcome, after all, when we say goodbye, we are paying tribute not just to the sadness in the moment, but the memory of all those great years of friendship.

It was already hard thinking of how to approach this, so I tried to just naturally build the piece. It's a pretty lo-fi mix, but I hope it hangs together.

Here is the art for the week (cat free, my partner and I looked and we'd taken over 1000 photos of him over the years and frankly, you can go to my instagram for many of those) I don't think I could do justice right now:

Thank you to the folk who reached out btw, or even reacted with an emoji, big heart to the WB community. Every pet owner really knows what it can be like. So I also dedicate this short little piece to y'all, I hope it matches for you too.

Finally! Here is the art from the 2016 track that featured Aki front and centre (Young Hopes for Old Dreams:

heart

Lovely little piece, sorry it had to have such a sad origin. It's part of life, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. Goodbye Aki, may the memory of you continue to inspire joy and happiness in your humans!

Aki heart

what a heartfelt & loving tribute. i can hear years of friendship distilled in these 3 minutes.
big hugs to you & your partner, James

heart Love the pads and slow build in this. The intro is especially really nice when it comes into focus through the static after :20 (the contrast is so crisp).

Aki sounds like a really lovely cat heart

I'm so sorry for your loss James. Saying goodbye like that must be so hard to do. I don't think I'll ever be ready for the day I have to farewell my cats. I'm sure Aki knew just how much he was loved.

This is a beautiful tribute piece. I cried listening to it, it's so beautifully moving. I agree that weeklybeats is like a diary - music can cause more vivid memories to occur for me than words alone, and I think you have captured something important for yourself here. Although it's a very sad time for you, I hope that in the future you can listen back and hear that this piece has captured the love, all 17 years of it.

Thanks all. It has been a tough week. Getting back to work and life does feel like it rolls over the emotions, but it still spikes my eyes when I hit play again (I didn't listen to this all week). I'm happy I took the time to write this.

so sorry for your loss.  I went thru something similar with my 19yo Beanie in 2023. The chords in this just instantly got me in the gut.  I had to listen twice because I was in tears reminiscing about my buddies.   There's something special about a cat's meow and purr. This is a beautiful tribute to Aki heart hugs

It'll never be not hard, not then, not now, not ever. This is a beautiful song, one that I will cherish even if you can't.

We lost ours last year, and with a life as fragmented as ours, it's hard to fully get a grip. And no WeeklyBeats either as a good emotional outlet. I'm sure your cat, by sheer virtue of you being you, had a wonderful life.
