Beat Type Beat

By XYON on February 13, 2022 11:53 pm

Back with another hip hop beat for Week 6. I had a little issue with being able to get the sub bass to cut through on my phone speakers but I just ended up boosting the mids/mid highs and carving out the same frequencies on my bus tracks. The bass is only a sub, no layered basses on top (maybe that was my issue?) Anyways, I wrote some chords in midi, printed to audio, chopped, and played MPC style. I messed around a little bit with resampling some synths for some effects, Shaperbox 2 on some vocal samples for faux scratching, and a few different Serum instances for all the actual instruments. I processed a few different samples for the drums as well as the layered foley sounds.

I've been putting heavy emphasis on creating templates and saving presets to help speed up my workflow so I can eventually incorporate my rhymes into these weekly beats. I personally think that a lot of my beats feel like they would sound better with me rapping on top of them, but maybe that's just what all rapper/producer combos think haha. Thanks for checking it out and feel free to leave any critiques.

***I ended up hating where the mix was sitting and reverting back to an older version of the project from 3 days ago and starting over a bit lol. I'm a lot happier with how the drums sound in the mix, I think I ended up over-compressing them before.

This beat is smooooth as heck. Nice work man!!!

nice

Rad! Love the scratching!

Sub sounds so good, great scratches, this definitely needs some vocals on top, be great to hear you rhyme on it

The sub is huuuuge. I like how it takes really the front of the stage and there are so many subtle elements in the back, with vocal samples and guitar like sounds. Sweet break at 1:06.

I relate with what you describe, about the feeling there is something missing if there are no vocals. But for people who listen, I did not feel that missing at all, it gave more focus on the sonic landscape you made here. That being said, I'd want to hear the version with rap on it as well!

Cool track.

this is sick! appreciate the detail you put into describing your workflow, excited to hear some rhymes in the future

Ha, nice title! Beat type beats the best type beats. Killer beat here though. That kick and sub sitting nice together, which is a challenge. Lots of nice little details floating around too.

lol at the title

your bass is killer.  full, not overblown.  especially during that pitch/bend up - so satisfying.
