fukinsei

Fukinsei. One of the aspects of the Japanese aesthetic known as Wabi-Sabi. It is the property of being irregular or asymmetric.

This weeks theme, for me at least, was to write a composition in an unconventional time signature. I chose to do it in 11/8. So I just put Ableton 11/8 and went to town.

There is some reordering of the divisions happening, and the divisions of different parts do not line up. It was really fun trying to figure it all out and make it work to my ears. It certainly is slightly off-kilter and asymmetric. Enjoy!

Any and all comments are welcome! hate it? love it? feel indifferent about it? let me know!

nice, I love those crushed reverb tails heart quality melodies here too smile

The whole thing is appealingly "off" yet somehow not off-putting.  It's quite upbeat and happy somehow and I especially like the bendy synth sounds that come in towards the end.

Great work with such a bloody weird time signature. Sounds great!

Love the time choices. The feel reminds of late 90s japanese fm music utterly amazing work. Love to hear more tracks like this.

Thanks, dude. the track screamed for some reverb on the clap (well, it asked politely, if i'm honest) great to hear you like the melody, i've been working on improving my melody lines!

Appealing instead of appalling is exactly what i was going for. I find it's quite difficult to listen to weird timesignatures, and i rarely hear happy unconventional timesig. songs. Usually a time sig. liket that is to emphasize that there is something dark or mysterious. not here though wink

Thanks man! some blood, sweat and maniacal laughter went into it to make it work.

I love this art style so much!!

You really made the odd time work very nicely. It sounds natural, which is impressive. The changing sub-divisions really keep it interesting for sure.

Digging this m8!

great stuff

This, my maaaan, is good! That rev tail keeps it all tied so well together, very clever. Love all the synth sound design, and that lead part later on fits better in the mix as well (don't remember who mentioned that last week). Hats off!

I'm probably going to be saying this a lot, but I feel like smashing some Rebels to this.

Best hand clap reverb ever.

that's an honor bestowed upon me, that i will wear with pride! thank you!

Catchy asymmetry; excellent.

Not used to comments, don't want to be influenced...But i'd be happy to be influenced by your work. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of your world with all of us

Happy to hear that its good enough to let it influence you!

Nice track! Just catching up on your stuff now, enjoying it. This feels more natural and a good groove than what I'd expect for 11/8 ... but then again I don't really have any expectations for 11/8 smile
Inspires me to try more off time signatures. Will plan on doing that soon!

Appreciate it! off time signatures are fun! I would wholeheartedly encourage you to explore it more! love to hear what you'd come up with!

I love unusual time signatures, though I think it can be a little more unusual. I'm more impressed by the sudden synth 2/3 of the way in.

May be a unique time signature but it doesn’t matter, just sounds good, really enjoyed this

wow. beautiful!! so neat!! i feel inspired to mess around with weird time signatures now. big_smile
