I continued down the path of learning to apply music theory a bit more consciously, although I invested less time in it this week. I also spent some time inspecting other people's m8 bundles, learning some 'new' techniques, although I haven't necessarily applied much of it here.

I ended up making a laid back track - maybe even a bit too tame. I had in mind making something where I change the chord progressions a bit for different sections, but for that I simply need to take a bit more time, which I didn't have much of (again) this week.

Next week will be a challenge, with a full weekend, while I usually need at least a couple of hours in the weekend to get something done. I think I might brush up an abandoned project from earlier to save some time. I don't want to deplete my weekly cheats folder so early smile.

The sound design on this is so lush. I love the sound of both the delay and the reverb on this. The bass is very big, but it's like cloud of warm air. A pleasant sound indeed.

As it stands I think this would be an excellent track during a cut scene in a video game. Where our heroes board a spaceship and we get exposition dialogue while we're traveling to another planet. And I think it could function well like that. As a piece to listen to on its own, I think it could use a little bit more bite, yes. Doesn't have to be much, as the atmosphere of the track is very nice. Just a tiny bit to keep things exciting. Rather than just pleasant, because it is that for sure. A very pleasant sound. Well done!

So normally you're one of the first people I go check, but I hadn't had the chance yet. I had WB playing automatically in the background, and when this came on I thought "oooooh, I really like this!" So I came to check who it was and leave a comment, and of course it was you! smile

I don't think this is too tame - it's a total vibe, and there's a lot of dynamic change over the track, so it's never boring. Great job!

These are some really great sounds. I'm digging the subtle little pitch bends on some of the pads (and those plinky plinks midway thru!). This gives me a strong visualization of driving through a pixel desert scene with a city out in the distance.

I'm really liking this vibe, how the arpeggio synth is breathing in and out of the song, while the bells and the pattern of your hi-hats gives me snowy vibes idk why, great song.

Your songs always have a super cozy relaxed vibe. Very warm and soft synths and mellow percussion. Love the arp in this one.

I didn't really mind that the chord progression stays the same througout, there's enough elements moving in and out of the arrangement to keep it interesting. Though I'd love to see what happens when you take your style into a more traditional song structure.

Yeah, I think this is more or less the kind of sound that I end up with naturally. Pleasant but lacking bite. It's fine, but I would like to have more of that bite sometimes. Something to work on. smile Thanks for the kind feedback!

Ha, that is so nice to read! Thank you, also for the kind feedback!

Love the visuals you describe. I didn't put it in the title, but I was indeed imagining a scene of a quiet ride in a car with a calming view. The association with "a pixel desert" is an interesting coincidence, as I've been looking at a lot of pixel art lately. It would be nice to make some pixel cover art at some point.

Thank you! I think the breathing in and out of elements is now my main way of transitioning between sections of a track. I want to experiment with other types of transitions in the future.

Thank you! Yes, I do focus on bringing in and out elements precisely because I don't really bring variation with different sections. That is something I would like to learn though. Maybe a project to focus on in upcoming WBs. Thank you for the kind feedback!

Thanks for all the kind feedback everyone!

The "trick" is to add a few "wrong" notes. Or at least unexpected notes. Things that rub up against what's there. Find the right "wrong note" at the right time and it's magic. The same applies to timing. It's displacing notes, putting them on off beats that creates tension. And tension in music is good. But you need to go out of your way to try it. To learn when to do it, and when not. So give yourself permission to use all of the notes on the keyboard, even if they're outside of the key. Just ask yourself "is this the good kind of bad? Or the bad kind of bad?". And then you'll get there is no time. Because then it just boils down to taste.

That makes a lot of sense and it is very concrete advice. Many thanks! I'll try to do something with it for the upcoming week. Already looking into 'borrowed chords' to add a bit more tension in progressions.

That section starting at 2:20 with everything coming together and the the chord progression driving it up into your lead melody segment is very nice.

This is comfy.
