Longing

By WahSp on January 18, 2026 10:08 am

This one is a bit different from my first two weeks. I was one of several ideas I was playing around with. I went with this idea because I wanted to have something with a breakbeat this time.

This track started with a chord progression that I made longer ago with u-he's Diva and that I decided to render to a wav to play around with on the m8 later. I had a project with just this and a breakbeat slumbering on the m8 for a while now. Everything else was added this week. Mixing and mastering was mostly done on the m8. I did do a little bit of stereo imaging and limiting in Ableton afterwards.

I am not super happy with the last bit yet and the breakbeat is still a bit repetitive, but overall I am happy to have done something meaningful with this chord progression. There's something about it that I really like.

Also, there is something weird (at least, I think it is weird) about this track. I am curious if people can figure out what it is.

I love those synths into the ping-pong delay at ~2 minutes. I also thought the slow fade-out was a good way to end this one. I'm curious what you thought was weird? Also you're 100% on my short-list of folks to check out as soon as all the tracks drop - I really am enjoying your stuff so far!

I like the groove and the looping melody! it's so nostalgic! great chord progression! lighthearted pop tune! but with a little bit of urgency! like "live life NOW YA BASTARD YOU ARE YOUNG AND FRESH, don't waste your good years!". like a tiny bit stressful fun! thats kinda what it makes me feel. nice drums too!

This is amazing.  Very dreamy vibe with good use of breaks.  Definitely conveys a sense of longing for something long past

Love the chords/melody. Very uplifting and dreamy.

This is so good!

Really love the dreamy vibe.
And the chords are beautiful.

They remind me of Sufjan Stevens.
The 3 chords from 2:32 for example. Feels like something he'd do.

Haha love this description!

Yo I think a few of the chords remind me of a song by ENYA! Just before the synths come in I realized. One of my earliest musical crushes!

Really fun listen

Love this.

Sets a nice pad, builds with the ARP and then the breaks are unexpected and lift it up.

I like it when people make tracks that are fun and energetic.

Thank you! That means a lot! The 'weird' thing is that every section is 17 bars. That is just how the chord progression turned out. Normally, it is something that really stands out to me when I end up with something like that, but in this case it sounded natural, so I kept it. Or maybe it is just not as weird as I thought it is and I am to stuck to the idea of sections being multiples of 2.

Haha, interesting description. The idea that this makes you think of Enya feels like a kind of honor. smile

Thank you! Yeah, that more or less captures how it made me feel!

I am going to check Sufjan Stevens out! Thanks for the reference and for the kind comments!

Thanks! I've been experimenting a lot with breakbeats since someone started a jungle compo in the Dirtywave m8 community. Still a lot to learn and something I hope to develop more through the weekly beats.
