Don't look back

Since the Dirtywave M8 Jungle Compo, I've been playing a lot with breakbeats, so there'll be plenty of breakbeats in my WB submissions. This track started out with me experimenting a bit with E minor chords on the FM synth. This is also the first time that I made use of auxiliary tables in a song. I had to do it here because I needed three FX lanes for the chords on the FM synth, but found that I needed another lane for filter automation. The chords are therefore set by jumping to auxiliary tables that have the notes for the chords set in the FX lanes.

I started with this track a while ago. I did a bit of arranging and polishing this week, but not as much as I wanted. For example, I had in mind to add some variation to the second breakbeat section (the slightly faster one). However, I spent quite a lot of my free time figuring out my Mega65. I am working on this crazy idea now to write a tracker for it, so that I can make use of its 4 SIDs without having to resort to external emulators (the whole point of having the Mega65 is to do the work on the Mega65 smile). I am also doing the coding on the Mega65. Lot's of fun, but time consuming.

For next week I hope to make something entirely new with a new toy I am expecting to receive tomorrow!

Very nice mix down. Can't wait to see this one progress.

I like the sounds of this track. The string pad is lovely, if a bit repetitive. Like they are at the forefront of the mix. But I don't feel like they a lot to say. Which makes me wonder why they are they center stage? I get that they are at the beginning of the tune. But I think the can recede into the background once you've established them, if you know what I mean. Obviously that's just my take on my things. So do with it what you will, of course. Anyway, good sounds. And I'm looking forward to hearing what your new toy will bring. And what you'll eventually squeeze out of the Mega65!

Yes, that absolutely makes sense. Overall the track could use more variation, I guess. Maybe it is now too much like an extended intro without a clear idea of how it should develop from there. Thanks for the helpful feedback! It definitely gives ideas to work with.

Nice chill breakbeat with super sweet tape wobble on those pads. I love how the vibe is both mellow and energetic. Could be some very solid puzzle game music.
Aux tables are so amazing dude, they're awesome for delegating complex tasks you want to repeat often. They open up so much space in the regular FX lanes. It's also fun to trigger them from instrument tables. For example they can do heavy reverb/delay ducking on each snare hit, and they'll keep running while other drum hits are already happening on that track.
Looking forward to hear more about that new toy of yours!

that breakbeat is so addictive and an instant head nodder.  The synth pads and melody have a calming effect to them and groove so nicely with the drums.  I agree with Dustsucker this would be excellent for a puzzle game ala Tetris.  Well done!

Agree with Tone Matrix about the breakbeats, and I *really* like the kick you've layered with them. Mix generally feels nice and wide, especially with those classic pads. Piano hints at some high flying melody but always floats away before we can get too close. Would love to hear you expand on this more, especially the bass riff towards the end

Great job, dude. I really like this. I love when a track can use breakbeats but still be low key. Congrats on using aux tables for the first time! You're already becoming a pro!

These pads are fantastic, and your breaks are nice and controlled, energetic without overwhelming everything else.
