Straight up just experimenting here. Not sure if its likable at all but I guess an exercise in trying to make a bunch of random chords sounds cohesive.
‹ Song Notes
I’m currently trying to put together a few albums of music, stuff I’ve already written and recorded, so my head space has been more on the logistical side of things. “What order should these songs go in?”, “If I released these on cassette tapes at some point should I take that into consideration for how much music could fit on each side?”, “What do I currently not like about this song that I should fix before release?”, “How can I make everything sound cohesive?”, “Should I reach out to someone to assist with mixing or mastering?”, "How much is it going to cost me to mix 3 albums?" etc. etc.
So I’m in this weird spot with writing music right now where I’m feeling a lot more purposeful with my approach to writing. I find myself actually thinking of concepts to give the song purpose, if the song should have a certain kind of message, or what I should focus on. Because of that, and the aforementioned logistical headspace, I just haven’t really felt like writing music. Plus I’ve just been really drained from work most days and I just want to veg out when the day is over.
Anyways, so I went in this song with a lot uncertainty as to what I wanted (Wow such title, much insight). I just dialed in a guitar tone I liked and, turned on a metronome at a sluggish 63 bpm and just improvised blindly. No discernible key center, just taking the same chord shape and moving it wherever the fingers landed with the goal of being purposeful with the improvisation session (as in, no self-doubt and letting my fingers falter because I hit an ugly sounding chord or note).
The improv was fine on its own but I felt like I needed to make a bit more of a creative effort this week because my last few weeks have been kind of phoned in. So I wrote some lyrics and vocal melodies and experimented with some different lead guitar tones for the second half. Vocal melodies were obviously kind of hard to sing because of the unpredictability of the chord changes. The low robotic whispery ambience you might hear in the second half is the last line of the lyrics reversed and slowed. This song definitely won't be many people's cup of tea, I'm sure. I'm not sure if it's mine either, there's some melodies and ideas I like but I'm not sure if it will stand the test of time in my mind. Maybe if I had started earlier this week and tweaked a few parts after repeated listens it would sound less aimless. Either way, got the noggin working a bit this time on my song so that's a plus.
