The Burning of a Sacred Tree

By ViridianLoom on April 3, 2022 7:26 am

Classic ViridianLoom right here, wrote a peaceful meditative song the week prior and this week it's all about the relentlessly loud, evil metal music. Burn it all down! The title is dually inspired by the movie title "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and then literately the burning of a sacred tree from a recently popular video game, which I also thought jives with the evil metal aesthetic.

The final touch on this song would have been some growls and maybe one singing section but I'm drawing a blank on what it should sound like. I took a few cracks at recording some growls and while some of the ideas are ok, there's not enough going on to really make the song sound better. I also couldn't quite capture the vibe with the lyrics, plus I kind of irritated my throat this time doing it because I haven't sang/growled in more than a month. So yeah, copping out with another instrumental for this week. If I ever release an album this would probably be on it and it would be fully realized.

Instant classic for sure.

I don't want to sound weird, but I'm probably going to listen to this again when I need to focus at work. heart

Haha thanks, it's not weird, there's a sub-genre of black metal that's dubbed "Atmospheric" black metal, which this song is probably inspired by. Black metal tends to have a drone-like quality to it at times. Anyways, that's quite the complement so thank you smile

Intense stuff! Rich and well-executed as always.

resounds with defiance!

I love how this starts out just immediately crushing down and continuing on with a slow rhythmic intensity that gets darker underneath but with beautiful melodies on top. The groovy black metal feel is really tasty. The change at around the 2:00 minute mark is really satisfying, and that long slow pick scrape (pretty sure that's what that was?) really ups the tension before releasing into those ringing chords. The leads at the end are excellent. I really really dig this. It gives me the same satisfaction I got when I heard Enslaved's Riitiir for the first time. Fantastic work! I'm going to be listening to this one many more times.

fantastic guitar playing in here. The sound is very ethereal and fits to the title well.

Solid. Love the guitars tone. Nice drum programming too. Let it burn.

Love the chord progressions and the arrangement! One thing I find a bit odd though, is that I'm not sure I hear a kick drum before the 2 minute mark. Is it getting lost in the mix or is it simply not there? Great work in any case smile

Sounds really good! Glad to see you back at it with the heavier stuff. Lots of room for vocals on this, can't wait to hear what you eventually do with it.

I think the last two parts flow into each other really well, and the ending is great.

Yeah, this was a little weird.

Another ViridianLoom epic track - heavy riffs yet kinda atmospheric vibe, superb tone with tasty solos. The outro riff is badass. More prog metal!

I love the solo part around 3:20 minutes in, it has some nostalgic jan hammer vibes to it! Great track!

LOL

I'm not kidding, within 3 seconds, I said to myself "YAAAASSSS, CLASSIC Viridian Loom!"

...then I read your description!  Amazing.  I have really enjoyed your stylistic diversions, of course, but it's nice to come back and get the "house special" every once in a while, ya know?

I'm actually into the somewhat softer mix of the drums, makes it still metal but not as harsh or thrashy?  Make sense?

I'm too scared to watch the Sacred Deer movie, but I really want to.  Was it super stressful?  UGH no spoilers please - do you recommend it?

I like this without lyrics.  I really have enjoyed the instrumental band Pelican, man I haven't listened to Pelican in YEARS gotta fix that.

lol "elden ring obviously"

lol, yeah, the house special is the perfect way to describe it. I'll start referring to it that way. As for "Killing of a Sacred Deer", it's actually not scary at all really. I went into it thinking it was going to be a thriller, but it turns out it's actually kind of a deadpan dark comedy? The acting is deliberately flat, like no one is capable of expressing emotion, which results in some pretty humorous moments when the actors deliver a loaded line of dialogue while still remaining emotionally flat in the face. I actually would find it hard to recommend to someone unless they're able to make that distinction that it's made to be that way for some artistic reason and that the movie is not very entertaining in a "Traditional" sense. I honestly didn't even really "get it" because I think it's drawing some parallel to an allegorical story I'm unfamiliar with, sort of like how that movie "mother!" is actually about biblical creation. But I still enjoyed it because I'm weird. If you also like to get down with weird, then I recommend it, haha. The director also made another equally strange film called The Lobster which is about how, in some dystopian future, single people are given a month to find a romantic partner or else they get turned into animals, lol.

On the topic of movies actually, if you do letterboxd (which is a pretty cool social media platform centered around movies) then you should follow me at https://letterboxd.com/mintchip55/

I love to see what others are watching so I can keep finding new and interesting movies to watch smile

Thanks! I can't remember if I responded to one of your other comments previously, but that day I logged in to see like 7 or 8 of my songs with comments on it because of you gave me a big hit of dopamine lol.

Sorry dude, I'm obviously on a bender catching up on your tracks! Keep 'em coming.  Big fan of your heavy guitar work.
