‹ Lyrics
A step into light
Allured by the shine from the chest
Opposite to you
Treasure that’s inside
Possessed by the scratching behind
Or was that in your mind?
Too late to be seen
Light from it’s mouth is gleaming
Descending from the ceiling
(The) creature begins feeding
White of the eyes
Dark inside
A fool to the end
And the blame (lies) in you
Drink deep the light
Drink deep the light
‹ Song Notes
I procrastinated all week and didn’t start until Friday night. I was sure I was just going to end up phoning it in but I came up with a little idea that I thought was promising. This song has two main parts: The verse which is in 10/8 and the Chorus which is 17/8. It’s always felt weird to me to name time signatures like that when how I actually feel the music is more like 6+6+6+2 (20/8 or 10/8) and 6+6+5 (17/8).
Anyways, given the weird time signatures it was fun trying to write a drum beat and a vocal line that would hopefully tie it together in a that sounds like it has a nice flow. At least to my ears. There’s some “jolting” to be expected but I’d hope the listener can start to anticipate how the measures end and can follow it decently. It passed the wife test, at least, so I think I did something right.
Vocals are bit rough around the edges. There’s some parts that at the edge of my head voice/falsetto range and I had a difficult time navigating that area. There’s also a lot of long-held parts like “Youuuuuuuuuuu” and “Mindddddddddddddd” which really tested my breath control without straining. You'll also see that I wrapped some of the lyrics in parenthesis because I couldn't fit the entire phrase into the meter.
I got a couple of art books in the mail this last week called Vermis I and Vermis II. They’re meant to be art for a video game that doesn’t exist, and by reading through the book and looking at the art you get an idea for what playing that game would actually be like. There was a section about a trapped chest where this horrible insectoid creature with an upside human face attacks you. It stayed in my mind when I was coming up with words so I just made the song about that.
This might be something I include on the Gold album I’m working on. The Purple album is intended to be mostly dark, gothic, and ambient stuff while I think the gold will have a lot more acoustic guitar, piano, and metal parts. I’m not entirely sure yet exactly what the vision for Gold is but I’m getting there. The whole Purple and Gold thing are just codenames based off the color of the album covers.
