Sentinel

Kind of struggling with song writing lately. This one is kind of alright, trying to stick to my guns on my goals. It's really short. At some point I kind of just embraced that this was going to be barely a song and decided to see if I could make a single verse into an ending guitar solo sound compelling at all. I did record some vocals but, to be honest, I'd like to listen to this song later without cringing at it. They weren't like god awful or anything, but they weren't making the song any better. I guess the important thing is that I even bothered to write lyrics and record singing at all, you just don't have to hear it tongue

The main synth melody is kind of inspired by a song in the OST for a game called Song of Saya (or Saya no Uta). Kind of a weird visual novel about a guy who suffers from agnosia due to a car accident and it causes him to see the world as something horrific. Stuff like undulating flesh and blood in the streets and people as deformed monsters. Except he comes across a girl who looks normal and beautiful, so he gets attached to her romantically. But, of course, turns out the only reason she looks normal with his agnosia is because she's actually a real monster. Don't know why I felt like sharing that, just a fun fact about the melody haha.

lol just read your comment about living in a desert - u and me being polar opposites confirmed.  love the track title.  the melody takes a great musical left turn, but the time signature does a double left turn for me.  this song makes me want to learn how to play more chords.

no vocals is fine for me, because this is a really dense riff that requires a lot of my attention.

u: "barely a song"
me: "one of the best riffs + rhythms I've heard all year"

smile

This one's cool! Kind of warbly and punchy at the same time. big_smile
I definitely empathize with struggling to write. Some weeks are just tougher than others. But it's always neat to hear what people are trying, even during the hard parts. Keep up the great work!

Haha, yeah, the time signatures are a result of me not knowing what I wanted to play in so I was like "Give me all the time". It's 7/8 at the beginning before the drums, then 5/4. Then back to 7/8 when it changes up. The last part with the solo I'm just going to say is all 4/4 except the 2nd measure out of every 8 bars is 3/4 (this is not me being clever, this is me messing up the riff when recording it and then saying "Well that's just prog baby", lol.)

I love the background story - that game sounds interesting. It gives indeed a video game vibe, except that you enrich it with prog accents here and there - like tasty drum fills and then a cool guitar solo. Inspiration comes and goes, and comes again. Keep at it. smile

I think this came out great!

So I read a plot summary of Song of Saya and... woah. Sounds like a trip and a half. Love the solo at the end of the track!

Synths sounds great. Great track again.

I really dig the warbly-ness. I think the warbly synth and the clean guitar notes blend so nicely to make a really unique sound. That's just prog, baby! I like it.

I don't know about barely a song, this is a song and a half

And the guitars are absolutely great, too.

I'm still rocking out to this in my car these past few weeks

I'm glad this left an impression on you, honestly the whole "rocking out to this in my car" but is one of the best compliments. There's been many times where I'm rocking out to someone else's tune when driving (ahem, "All These Things in Time") and I begin fantasizing/dreaming that maybe someone, somewhere, someday might do the same to one of my songs. So thanks for making that a reality for me.

Oh and I was also way to harsh on this song. It's pretty good. I think it's a fine short tune. Sentinel has a nice warbly aesthetic to it and the accidental prog at the end is pretty fun and atmospheric.

When I get mega stressed about song writing due to self-imposed high standards that I don't meet, I start bashing myself pretty hard. I can look back on that behavior later with a level-head and be like "That's a really silly thing to do" but even with that awareness I can't help but slip into that negative mindset sometimes. Trying to be more mindful in general. Lately I've been setting ideas aside if I'm not happy with them and starting on something else just so I don't feel the pressure to rush out songs I'm not confident in. Hopefully that works better for my attitude.

I think musicians have a tendency to over-explain, and the worst time to over-explain is that particularly sensitive time while posting / when something's just getting done. Highly recommend trying it next time you're unhappy w/ a thing -- just give it two days, then hear it again. heart

I really like the vibrato warble and think all of this works.

I decided to go through your back catalogue. Glad I did! This one is awesome. I saw in your description that you didn't think much of it and it looks like others were trying to convince that it was indeed, sick. One more vote for sick track from me! The synths are great and the vibrato effect on the guitars is great. The rhythm is nice and interesting and the melodies are nostalgic and melancholy. This track is perfect for a night with a full moon night stroll.
