This last week I've been trying to conceptualize some blended form of progressive metal/rock with electronic music in a way that would also lend itself well to some sci-fi themes and general aesthetic. But I'm not quite there yet. On this track I was experimenting with synth sounds and trying to alter my guitar and bass tones to sound a little more spacey. In the process, I overdosed on the prog aspect and just had a hell of a time trying to wrangle in the time signatures in this song. Originally parts of it were in 15/16 or something which I couldn't quite get to flow nicely. Now most of it is in 4/4, but I still don't think it's easy to like bop to. My girlfriend said the beat is hard to follow, haha. It's cutting pretty close to the deadline, I think the mix is pretty decent but some of the synths have too much high end in some parts and that bothers me a bit.

Oh and the song takes a 180 in the second half. It's basically just a second idea I had where I really dug the vibe and didn't want to throw it away, so it's just tacked onto this for the fun of it. It might go on for too long, but I get lost in the mood so it's a personal choice.

This song is taking me out on a date, the first part is the fun stuff, the second the "fun" stuff
I really enjoy both parts tho

Stellar progression. I love both halves of this, and they compliment each other well.

i vibed

the prog-ness was fine imo :]

I think the varied rhythms in here are really fun. It bops super hard! The guitar riffs are super cool and your bass playing underneath is really funky as well. I love the vibe in the second half. I know you said that it was more or less a different idea but I'm glad you included it. The vibe is close enough that it makes sense together but still has a nice contrast. I really really like the synth sounds you chose for that second half as well. The lead synths have a great tone and the bass sounds massive. Really nicely done. This is definitely one of my favorites of yours this year!

Maybe not head-boppy in the traditional sense, but I really dig the guitar part that comes in at around 0:55. Really fantastic. I also like the way the second part comes in. The synth sounds are great.

the mix is very good and the music is high level. very well done.

I think the first part is superb fun, but this is coming from a nerd. I default to my wife’s opinions for determining if stuffs actually fun or not (a lesser good thing is a non-musician friend, but not the same). But to nerds, at least, this is definitely banging. The progression is stellar and I really like phrasing of the distorted rhythm clusters (all the primary movement 0:30-0:55).

Second half is brilliant and it’s inclusion is thoroughly welcome. Love that dubbed out beat!

Whereas the first half is really good progressive rock, the second half takes us to intergalatic spacerock. The synth layer add dimension to the track. For the me the highlight is the riff that really bridges the first section into the second around 2:33 onwards - very epic riff!

I think you struck on a really great prog rock sound with some very jazzy over tones.  Love the punctuated hits throughout. The lead guitar really ties it all together as well. Loving your bass tone as well! Very low bass notes, are you on a 5 string or drop D? Love love love the change up midway through.  Totally shifts gears. Nice!

Thanks! I'm using a 5 string bass tuned a half step down. There's a band I really like that's a half step down and I've been learning their stuff so the last 4 or 5 songs I've done are all tuned to Eb Standard on the guitar and bass. smile I was also pretty happy with the bass tone here as well because I was trying to create my own from scratch rather than rely on presets out of BiasFx. It ended up being quite nice.

i love both halfs! they do sound distinctly different from each other, but still work together as a journey between two spaces. i especially love the crispy crunchy sound of the drums in the second half, too... meanwhile, i love the guitar vibes of the first half as well... the whole thing so good!

First half reminds me of Katatonia, death metal band I was listening to when I was a kid. Good times! Second half is a cool reinterpretation of the first. Really nice prog riffs!

The first half sounds cool, but the second half sounds amazing. The delay puts everything in this huge space that sounds really great. Groovy riffs. I thought the rhythm hung together pretty well for bopping along. I think you've gotten better at letting the drums groove underneath the complexity you put into the guitars.

something about not listening to your music for months and coming back and listening to all this back to back is like REALLLY freaking me out

LIKE REALLY

downloaded and am listening on repeat sorry everyone who else I was supposed to catch up on

Agreed, this is a really huge plot twist where the heroic action/adventure film becomes an animated sci-fi mystery (oh!  i just realized I should do film analogies since you are a film buff smile )
