Purge

By ViridianLoom on August 21, 2022 11:01 pm

This is one of those types of tracks where I picked up the guitar for a first time in a while to try to write a guitar centric tune and I came up with lots and lots of ideas, but I feel like 70% of the ideas here are uninspired (prog go brr). That, or I couldn't seem to contextualize them correctly. So it's kind of become a "purge" track where I just try to smash all these ideas together to get them out of my system to hopefully make room for better stuff on a future track.

I initially wanted to try to do some synth parts that match up to the guitar riffs and add some interesting texture but I spent way too long just going through all these random ideas I came up with (there's actually 8 additional riffs that I didn't include here, clearly just got out of hand) I was labeling the riffs, figuring out their time signatures, trying to come up with drum and bass parts for them so I could get the full vibe of the riff to decide if it was worth including or not. All together, there was way too much trial and error and it was not all that fun. Also as  a result, there wasn't a whole lot of time left over to try to come up with some melodies that might have salvaged everything, so it is what it is. At this point. Like I said, sometimes you just got to purge yourself of all the shitty ideas to make room for good music again.

Anyways, this week I played that game Cult of the Lamb and beat it. Really fun little game, pretty damn good soundtrack too. Would love to learn how to do some of those skipping voices for a future track.

For what it's worth, I'm grateful you put this one out. Prog rock's something I have less exposure to, so it may just be harder for me to tell, but this sounds pretty cool and cohesive to me!

I think this will be one of those tunes that will grow in your estimation once you have a little bit more separation from it. The transition out of the first riff at 0:34 is cool as fuck. The second riff (right after that transition) is where the song really grabbed me. Such a nasty riff. I love the interplay between the panned guitars at 3:55 or so. The final riff you go into felt like it had potential to really spread its wings and build upon. Nice job with the drums and bass, too. They felt and sounded good.

How about some growls and shit? Let's gooo!!!!

I think the idea of a purge track is fantastic. The idea of putting stray ideas into a creation so you can move on from them is really powerful. You could potentially come back and find something salvageable or leave the track entirely for the archives—both are wins.

I love the feeling of picking up an instrument you haven't played in a while and just letting it all out!! That said, the guitar riffs sound great and have that energy. Especially like the heavy nature of the riffs and chords and how well they are punctuated by the drums. It's the open spaces and pauses that make the track so full.

I could see synths adding so much to this, nice job

The intro riff is really cool but my preference goes to the second riff (around 0:50), with its cool rhythmic pattern. If these are the leftover, I am really curious to hear the thing that you actually liked! This was a pretty sick collection of riffs and ideas.

excellent prog!

you're like a ninja on the guitar heart

with cat-like grace too big_smile

03:37 riff is funky -- this is dope, hella heavy. Love the write-up, but I think this is a lot more cohesive than you led me believe. Regardless, can relate to "purge" in the musical ideas sense, so hell yeah. *Throw up the horns* dope riffs, well played. heart
