Lions Eating the Sun

By ViridianLoom on November 20, 2022 11:49 pm

I've been doing WeeklyBeats for almost two full years and I still haven't learned to get my songs written earlier in the week so I can dedicate some time to a proper mix, haha. I only really had one main riff when I started this morning so I spent like 6 hours today on writing and recording this. I'm pretty tired at this point, but listening to the song on a different speaker system, my first impression is that the bass is too big in the mix and kind of overwhelming other parts.

Anyways, the aim with this week's submission was to go back and spend some time with Addictive Drummer, which I still don't quite have down compared to NI Studio Drummer. I also recently had some kind of software corruption with BiasFx2 (my guitar plugin) that required me to reinstall it, which yeeted all my custom presets into the void. That wouldn't be the biggest deal I guess but where it hurts the most is that this issue has nuked all my guitar settings on past projects which is going to make remixing them a pain in the ass. Hopefully finding new tones from scratch will yield better sounds in the long run.

For the composition I think I was going for some kind of blend between Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, and Enslaved. This is kind of continuing a trend of slow-tempo metal like I did with Widower too, just in that kind of mood lately I suppose. I would have liked to have done vocals for this track but I just can't write lyrics and vox fast enough and, as of this time, I only have 20 minutes before the submission is due. Maybe when I revisit it. I'm planning on doing vocals for most of these tracks I didn't add vocals to at some point.

Ah man, the end of the year is right around the corner. Great job this year, everyone. I feel kind of guilty because, at some point, I just stopped listening to most people's tracks and I guess it's because every time I finally got a track done I just wanted to distance myself from this site so I could mentally recoup. It's been kind of stressful balancing my job and writing music but I think I'm in a better headspace now. I had some moment of clarity recently where I realized that my songs don't need to be perfect, I'm doing this for fun, and part of the fun is learning and improving. So even though I'm exhausted from working on this song today, I'm not really beating myself up over the it's imperfections.

Anyways, I plan on getting back into listening to people's tracks and trying to go through some of the past weeks I missed. Thank you for everyone that continues to check in every week, I feel the love.

That intro riff is soooooo sick. Massive headbanger! I love the somber/grungy/evil clean guitar riffage as well. The solo carries the melody and emotion of the song really well. The drums sound really really nice. They have a nice amount of high end so I can really hear the hi-hats rattle. That heavy slammy part at 3:47 is awesome! Totally gives me Gojira vibes. I love the signature Viridian Loom  melodic riffing at 4:28! The outro wraps things up really nicely. Kinda atmospheric in a way even though there is a strong melodic line.

Awesome awesome job!

The bass has a strong presence for sure, but I don't think it overwhelms the other parts too much. And I dig the composition!

always love the detail in all your guitar tones, some sit distant in the mids, some are bright and piercing, everything fills the space perfectly with a defiant presence. and the track with this heavy-driven vibe deserves this level of detail in the mix and sound, nice work! heart

This is awesome! I think this is one of those that you'll come back to like it more than you do now. Drums slam really hard in this one. The section starting around 2:55 is my favorite part. The rhythm is super interesting, but not so interesting that I can't predict it. Right in the sweet spot, IMO. And the next section around 3:30 is heavy and awesome. The clickety clackety super distorted bass sound floating in the high end sounds really cool and fills that range nicely.

Wow! Nice job!

At least on my speakers, I think the bass sound is good. It is definitely there, but not in a way that takes away the track. It gives body where is needed. That guitar lead from 2:05 on is epic. It's not overdone, a good melody on top, with the right notes to compliment the other parts.

It's good to read that you feel in a better place/less stressed by the weekly beats and enjoying the flow! One month to go!

This is amazing, it's heavy in all the right places, so that bass thing is more of a benfit
- Ebrit

The bass sounds good -- just a gentle 1-pole HP at 200 Hz or so will tame the bass or a -3dB shelf again at 200, but to be honest w/ you I'm not hearing any issues, the only sections that would benefit from this would be the quieter 1:30-1:56 and the 5:00-5:15 "regrouping" before the big finale.

The mix is _perfect_ in that 3:50-ish rhythmic section. heart

You also play really well and write dope music, too... big_smile
