Ixion Turns

Not really sure where my mindset was with this week's tune. The first part is influenced by stoner metal stuff, then takes a shift into some weird time signature stuff (6/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 6/8 + 2/8 if you want to count it, had difficulty trying to write drums to it), then some synthy stuff integrated at the very end. Not entirely convinced it all works well together, but the individual components have potential if I wanted to deconstruct it and reuse it later. I also find it's pretty hard to pair up metal and synths sometimes. I have an easier time when I want a section to sound "pretty" because I can just put a saucy, dreamy synth over the top, but I'm not sure how to make "heavy" synths. Also mixing all of those different types of sounds can be kind of a nightmare.

Also, figured I'd try posting up a video of me performing it. Just the rhythm guitar section, most of the lead guitar in the first half is improvised noodling so it would take me too long to match it up to the original track.

I object to this on the grounds that you didn't add growl vocals and this track is not-actually-literally-but-figuratively-litarally screaming out for a growl part. This is super solid. It's a little surprising when that first synth comes in, but all the synths at the outro tied together really nicely with the vibe. This is top tier work. One of your best this year.

That bass tone is NASTY. I love it. I really like the rhythm figure in the intro. It's a head banger with plenty of interesting surprises. I love the funky rockin' feel at 1:14. That's some chawnky groove right there. The drums sound really nice and clear without sounding too loud. I need to figure how to get that clarity in future efforts. I love the drop out around 2:32 before coming back in with that sexy groove. I could listen to that all day! I really love how bassy this track is. I think the synths are a nice touch, I really like the combination of guitar and synth. I'll have to try that myself sometime. I also like that rhythm in the guitar at 4:28. Over all this is a nice heavy song. Also your lead tones sound super warm and clear as usual!

I did actually want to do growls on it, I even did some scratch takes to deliberately sound like Ihsahn (that guest vocalist on "Contaminant me" by  Leprous) but for the sake of my sanity and getting this song done early, I just opted to do some guitar noodling over the beginning riffs. For that reason, I'm not a fan of the noodling because they're just an afterthought to help the first half not sound so empty. And yeah, I also would have tried to integrate some synths earlier in the song so it wouldn't be as much of a surprise later but I had trouble nailing down a sound I wanted to use. I'm glad you enjoyed it though smile

I am not familiar with prog metal and stoner metal. But this is very interesting and sounds so good. The rhythmic work on the guitarriffs vs the drumbeats are fantastic. The synths in endsection give the song more juice. Very cool stuff and thanks for the bedroomvideo.

What a fun coincidence, I did a stoner rock with synth this week as well! Though it's interesting as I can see you coming to stoner from a prog background and me coming to stoner from a punk/grunge background so the results are different! Some riffs in this track are even messhuggah like, you got some heavy groovy riffs in there! Good job. Maybe we should do a desert session collab one of these days!

Yo this is a great prog metal track! The sound is awesome and also the rhythm and riffs are quite varied and keep it interesting. I'm tired now so maybe that's why but it hit me pretty hard! I miss listening to this genre from way back in highschool big_smile but I guess I'm also not quite furious enough these days XD

I can imagine it's more fun to make this with a band than solo, especially when you can be loud in the studio! Do you still have a band and how is it producing metal tracks solo vs having others to play with? Seems like a high energy kinda music to just sit contemplatively alone and compose sections for heheh. I know it can be hard to find ppl to play with too so I also don't want this to sound like I'm criticizing, I'm just wondering about the process.

such a headbanger!  also great to see you playing!!!

(oops pressed submit)

the 2:45 breakdown is so sick.  great snare drum accents on that

nice choice for the slo fade out

Love the bass in the track. Guitars great as usual and solid drums programming.

That's some powerful prog metal for sure. You don't really need to fix the structure, only the narrative.

Thank you! I do love little thematic song coincidences when they occur smile. For a desert session collab, how do you mean? Like a desert-rock vibe or something? Either way, I'd love to get out of my shell a bit and do some collabs smile

Yeah so I am currently in a band but we're still trying to figure out our sound as a group. A couple of the guys aren't as into the technical aspect of some of the heavy music I'm into, like, they like listening to it but they don't want to play it per se. As far as producing solo, I guess I've always found it to be a lot easier? When I write with others I like being challenged to write new music that I think the other band mates might like but I also find it frustrating (for myself, not frustrated at them) if they end up not liking it. So I prefer to write this kind of stuff on my own, although it gets pretty hard trying to fill all the roles by myself but it is what it is. I do really like playing live and loud to an audience though, its a really great feeling that rarely happens for me.

Thanks for the insight. Interesting to hear. I have a similar experience making stuff for others. I still can't really bring my compositions to others, but rather I'll play whatever they wanna play, to avoid the whole risky factor of will they like it smile it's slowly changing as I write more and make recordings, WB is a kind of turning point cause I get a sense of what I like, what people like, and how to deal with it. But hey another issue is that live playing is a different beast than producing (can't cheat just as much big_smile)

Hey good luck getting more live gigs!

Damn, great guitars and tones.  I think it all works well together and the signature changes are really cool. Great to see the behind the scenes footage.
