Intermission n.1

By ViridianLoom on January 23, 2022 4:38 pm

Oof. Well, didn't really meet my personal goals for this week's song but it happens. When I wrote Hydaelyn's Will I was like "There's no way week 2 is going to be any good by comparison" so I took an approach of just writing something from a completely different mindset knowing it wouldn't compare. Somehow, I felt like Meridian Trailing Light managed to be different enough from the first song that it stood on its own but it also had certain elements that matched, so in my head those two songs are paired together on a future album.

And thus the fatal flaw in my writing this week. I spent too much time trying to come up with something "worthy" enough to be a 3rd song on the same album. It needed to do something new and different, but it still needed to be prog rock or prog metal or whatever.

And yeah, that didn't happen. By mid week I had like 4 different potential projects but none of them were inspiring me and none of them even remotely had a song structure, they were just extended jams. The only thing I seemingly enjoyed was when I pulled up a piano vst, slapped some reverb on it, held down the sustain pedal, and then just improvised. It's nice enough and serves the purpose for a WB I can submit. But it's not album material.

Anyways, before I wrote song #1 this year I wanted to focus on three things: mixing, singing, and keys. It wasn't until I wrote those last two songs that my brain was like "Oh and how about we turn the first 13 weeks into a stream of conscious prog rock album, that'd be delightful". BUT THAT'S A TRAP. Granted, I do think making an addition of "Keep your music thematically consistent" is a stretch goal. I'd rather find a niche that encompasses my interests rather than make a completely unrelated bossa nova after a death metal song one week.

Also, it's my birthday! I really need to just chill out and enjoy the day rather than stress that I didn't meet my goals. To top it off, I got a really important interview tomorrow so if anything I should be practicing for that.

Chill vibes. They can't all be bangers. Whatever's in you, that's what you gotta let out. Keep on keepin' on, good luck at the interview, and happy birthday!

A very lovely interlude.  Contrast is good and HBD!

Happy birthday!

Hey I enjoyed your improvisation. This is pretty. Sometimes the imagination needs a palate cleanser and this is a very lovely one. I find that I can never force inspiration and that I just need to accept it and go with whatever flow the muse is heading to. This is the price to pay to keep the inspiration. And after that it's a curation work to organize the tracks into a thematically consistent album. But that's just me. I enjoyed that track! smile

this is the chilliest song this year. I enjoy getting relaxed. happy birthday from me, best wishes for you.

Happy birthday! You're setting a high bar for yourself, which is awesome, but some weeks are definitely going to be harder than others. For what it's worth, I could happily listen to more of these intermissions.

Happy Birthday!

You're right that having a niche is worth it, but sometimes it's okay to get off the beaten path for a bit and reset yourself

I love WB because it's so wild to hear people's perspectives on their own work.  I really appreciate you because I think we come from really different angles.

This track wasn't what you wanted but for me, I'm like, "Dang, it would be awesome to be able to improv piano like this" and then you wrote:

"a completely unrelated bossa nova after a death metal song"

and i'm like MMMMMM GREAT IDEA I WANT TO DO THAT lol

I love hearing your thought process.  Happy birthday and let us know how the interview went! heart

Nice and pensive. It's neat to get to hear you writing in an ambient piano style. And happy (belated) birthday! big_smile

...This one's a a favorite and a download. Excellent harmonic pacing in this.
