Floating Lights

By ViridianLoom on June 19, 2022 10:42 pm

Spent quite a bit time playing around with Massive and trying to create synth sounds from the ground up, which you can hear here. The song itself is a bit half-hearted, I didn't want to do any complex arrangements that would require hours and hours of commitment to see it through. At the same time, I also felt like I should probably keep up my progress of adding vocals to my track so I did, although I'm not particular satisfied with them. I attribute that mostly to being one of those issues where I probably would have preferred to keep this idea in incubation little longer since I can *feel* what I want from it but I can't currently envision the road map to getting there. Real happy with that Pulsing LFO-Synth-Organ patch I came up with though, I felt like it really establishes the vibe of the tune and so I built everything up around it.

Good hihat work. Like the organ. Nice simple vocals, good guitar, nice one

Firstly, this is a beautiful song! I love the synths sounds you built in the intro. They sound so shimmery. They have an awesome vaporware sound. The bass slams! It's so relaxing and heavy at the same time. Your vocal performance is really pleasing. It has a haunting quality to it. I love the melancholy lyrics, it all meshes together to create a warm dreamy atmosphere. That guitar melody at 2:54 Is beautiful and the vocal melody that comes right after goes together so well! Something about it has a nostalgia inducing quality for me. Meanwhile the bass is still grooving so heavy underneath. I already mentioned it about the bass, but the whole song is so heavy and pretty at the same time. I know it may not be exactly what you had in mind but I think it came out great!

Fantastic work on this one. The first half of it was giving me some rich Shin Megami Tensei vibes, and then the tonal shift in the outro elevated the track to a new level. This might be one of my favorites. big_smile

Really like the vocals. Wasn't sure how they were going to fit but they're work really well.

Massive patch is excellent, absolutely love the register you're playing it in, too -- given the timbre of voice & guitar / bass. I'm not sure if the guitar is too bright for the vocals during the "floating weight" section in terms of masking the voice some -- I thought the effect was nice, but then when you give the voice more space in "I've put my plans on hold" it seemed "better" -- not critique nor even a question, just an observation, really, but if I do make up my mind (unlikely, given last few weeks of music & job) I'll let you know.

Is the bright synth also Massive? Also an excellent patch! Excellent song, psychedelic vibes, and I still adore your bass tone, like I did on every tune of yours. heart

For me the standouts in this track were:

- the hi-hat in the intro
- when the first guitar came in (love the effects on it)
- the final vocal chorus you repeat twice. Great imagery, and evocative.

Nice work

second chord and fourth are so nice smile sweet progression! and damn the guitar fits so well mmmmmhmmmm!!!!

great vocals and synth solo!!!

the B part that sounds more major is soooo satisfying! and great ending!

really love this track big_smile gives me the good soul cleansing vibes.

So good. Everthing fits perfectly in here. the beautiful vocals, the guitarwork, the organ, the chordchanges. this is a marvelous track. so special and unique the way you compose.

Others mentioned it already and that could be thought of as a detail but I concur in finding the hints work very good. Beyond that, the synth tone, guitar tone, and bass tones are really well chosen to compliment one another. The vocals are very good and mixed in the right spot, as an instrument among the others.
I like how it feels that the track open around the 2:50 mark.
How are you finding Massive? On my side I still stick with the presets as there so many good ones… but great work on doing an exploration on this track!

Massive is def a powerful synth.  So many options and such I always used to get lost in the amount of presets smile  The opening chords set the mood nicely and then the guitar/bass and drums just ties it all in so nice.  Your vocals sound awesome and fit so nicely in the mix with all the other elements.

Really great effected guitar and bass.  Love love the dreamy quality of the vocals!!  Also gig that brassy synth lead that brings in the second half. Really good vocal production! Great space jam.

Excellent lyrics, exquisite vocals! I love the floaty-dreamy yet slightly-on-edge vibe too, like a lightness pleading with the dark big_smile

Thanks! I do appreciate the feedback. I put a ton of reverb on my voice because I wanted it to fit into the ambiance of the song but I was also having difficulty with finding the balance between them filling out space AND being focused in the center. I've been meaning to practice more with sidechain/multiband compression, and actually just compression in general.  Also, that "echoes of yesterday" line might have been a screw up where I layered a background vocal saying "Delayed and wasting away" from the previous stanza haha. Regardless, I'm definitely going to save your comment in my notes so when I revisit this song I can try to fix it.

Thanks! Yeah, I think what's going on with the guitar is that I was trying to give it it's own area in the EQ so that it could be distinctly heard in isolation but it was too close to the vocal lines. It might also have gotten better in the ending section of the song because I had a chorus effect on the guitar up until that point and then I switched it off with automation. So because it was less saucy, it might have cleaned up the mix and allowed the vocal part to come through. Also I just sing quietly, mostly a confidence issue, so I'm probably not projecting as well as I should.

Oh and I cheated, the synth I did the solo with is actually a preset from Spire because I was running out of time and the song felt like it needed something to pad out the section tongue

I've always thought Massive was a cool synth and that the presets were cool in isolation but the reason I've ended up not using it so much in the past is simply because those presets, at least to my ear, don't seem like a particularly good match to my style. But it appears to be a powerful tool capable of a lot of sounds. Disasterpeace used Massive in his soundtracks for Fez and Hyperlight Drifter so I thought of those as source of inspiration when I was trying to build sounds of my own. It's quite fun learning something new too. I'd like to also dig into Absynth and Reaktor Blocks so I can get better at sound design smile

Dig that deep bass tone along with the guitar wash and the voice really ties the song together.
