Digital Shopper (Midnight Theme)

By ViridianLoom on October 4, 2020 11:53 pm

Still trying to write music with the mindset of it being for a video game or something. With this song I tried to imagine a specific scenario the music would be for, so I was imagining a sci-fi JRPG type of game like Crosscode or Phantasy Star and the character can essentially access an online shopping app from a menu and order equipment to wherever they are instantly. Except, the give the "experience" of shopping like the good ol days, the user gets a little digital avatar and can explore digital shops, haha. This would basically be the music for the digital shopping mall or whatever.

This time I built the song on a chord progression Cm7 - Fsus - Cm7 - Fm7. I used Spire for a lot of the synth sounds and combined it with the M1 for the bass and Wavestation for some nice pads. Threw in some strings from Kontakt and recording some guitar parts at the end to compliment the melody. Then I spent more time than I normally do trying to mix this and it probably didn't matter much haha.

I don't know if I managed to capture the vibe, but as always, it was fun to experiment with something new. I think I'm going to keep this up for the remainder of the year, practicing video game soundtrack composition. At some point I'd really love to write music for some passionate person's game.

That progression has far too many minor chords to be shopping music of any kind, even if they're sevenths. The energy's good though, feels more suitable for mysterious ruins than a shopping mall. The sounds are great too.

CrossCode and Phantasy Star? Solid taste! And I'm totally getting those same vibes from this track, especially from the 1:36 mark onward. I like the mysterious atmosphere of this track. Neat to hear the mileage you're getting from those KORG VST's. wink

Yeah that's valid. I was also picturing VA11 Hall-A as a source of inspiration too and that game is pretty much all night time vibes, so maybe since this is all minor I should retitle it "Midnight Digital Shopper" and then I could try a happier approach for a "Daytime Digital Shopper" theme. I'm bad at writing happy sounding music but I guess that's part of the work involved with video game soundtracks haha.

Hell yeah, the Korg Collection stuff is really cool, I especially love the bass sounds. But since I'm using Demos I have to close Reaper down every 20 minutes haha. I'll own them eventually.

It's not isolated to just video game soundtracks, it's music theory in general.

Personally, I don't buy into the minor = sad, major = happy ideology; to my ear, all kinds of minor chords just seem more interesting and compelling than their major counterparts. That said, a Midnight Shopper seems more interesting and compelling than its noonday counterpart. For what it's worth, I got a wide-open beachfront kind of vibe from this.

The midnight shopper vibe is definitely there. It's like a soundtrack for the kind of shopping that only happens late in the evening, when the rest of the world is asleep.

It’s definitely got that “mysterious” Phantasy Star vibe to me. Nice work; I like the complexity in this piece.

Fits very well with your description... Ready to exchange my credits for cool new items. smile.

Really sounds like your starting to zero in on your sound!

That music sounds to me something like this image.
