Crumb

By ViridianLoom on July 3, 2022 10:46 pm

Hey peeps! Thanks for the well wishes last week on my interview. It was the second interview of a three-part screening process and I ended up also having the final interview on Wednesday. I feel as if it went really well but I'm not getting my hopes up because there's a lot of competition. If I get it, awesome, if I don't, at least I don't have to stress about a new job AND writing a song every week so I guess there's a silver lining to everything haha.

So this was the song I mentioned from last week that I started but didn't feel compelled to finish at the time. It's supposed to be inspired by some of  the psychedelic indie rock stuff I've listened to like Crumb, thus the name, but not it's particularly chill and laid back. Actually I don't know, you might be hard pressed to find similarities to that band but it's a sweet album so check it out haha. I started having fun with writing upbeat bass lines so the drums also needed that same energy. I've also been wanting to experiment a bit more with chord progressions that might not be ear-pleasing so the "solo" section is a progression that just continues to move up a half step in key. I wouldn't say it's disorienting or anything, but it might counter other ideas established in the song. But meh, I kind of liked the way it came out.

Recorded a video of me playing through this after the fact. The quality isn't as great, but it's here if you want to see how the bassline is played because you play bass or whatever tongue

This is awesome! Stellar bass playing. Sounds super funky! The groove is strong with this one. I love the shimmery/crystal/star sounding synths. When the heavy stuff comes in at 2:14 it's super satisfying. There's a super beautiful atmosphere to this one that I really like. I love that the energy drops out for the outro and then fades out slowly. Excellent excellent work!

Agree with Saguaro, such a blissful entrance with the 'crystalish' modulating lead synth towards 1:30. Nice track!

Your bass is (a) exceptionally well played, (b) exceptionally well mixed, and (c) written cleverly af. This mixture of psychedelic / math-rock vides on display here is surprisingly firing on both "complexity" and "out there" cylinders. I like this one a lot.

The prog bass is really extraordinary. It both has a great tone and tasty lines. It's interesting to hear you putting more synth in your track, though we still are very much in the prog music, which is very fine. smile Your tracks are always complex - how long does it usually take you to compose and record them?

you are a genius. can feel a Steely Dan friendship here. an awesome piece of music.

Solid bass playing. You are pretty good going into those odd time signatures. I really like those synths on that track.

Well played...

LOVing that bass tone.  Great job!  I just ordered some new bass strings for the first time in [REDACTED] so I can't wait to string 'em up and practice some awesome riffs like this!  What make/model bass is that?

I wrote the comment before the song ended and it shows:  B U S T E D

This is on par with Sentinel for pure constant-loop-while-drivingosity

This show is so ridiculous, everyone is amazing, but the bassist is really going full tilt in particular

Great bass playing! Flexing with the 5 string!

There's certainly a sense of tenseness in this, I think it's the signatures that do it.

Thanks! Only a week usually tongue. I came with with a few ideas for this one from the week prior but it wasn't enough for the song to really take form yet. I'd say only 10% of it was concieved before and the other 90% was made the week I worked on this.

Thanks! Hope you have some fun playing on some fresh strings :3 I too am guilty of letting my strings go for a long time without changing. I recently got really embarassed when I let a band mate play my guitar and then he commented to me afterwards how his fingers were smelly. AHHHHHHH lol. It's like being told you have bad BO XD. Anyways, the bass itself is an Ibanaez SR655E. I did a lot of research when shopping for a new bass and I was super happy with that one. It has a brand of pickups that are highly regarded, and the pickups themselves are like a Fender Precision bass on the neck and a Fender Jazz bass on the bridge, so best of both worlds. It also has a switch to flip between passive and active pickup modes. The Ibanez SR models also have pretty thin necks so it feels like you're playing a guitar which is a big deal for me because I just find it way more comfortable to play. I basically wanted something I'd enjoy playing that could also be a jack of all trades, so I highly highly highly recommend it if you can ever find one. Also, I'm glad you enjoy that band Crumb ^_^, they're stellar.

Damn, really creative bass playing. Great job on this one. I think the half step solo section was nicely done. It didn't suffer musically on the alter of experimentation, IMO. See you next week.
