Red Sand

I tried to push myself in some new directions with this week’s piece. The core concept was to create something cinematic that tickled the edge of sonic harshness while still retaining a sense of beauty. From a cinematic standpoint I wanted to combine something familiar with unexpected elements and hopefully evoke the image of a scene. Maybe a bit overly ambitious for the time I had, and I most definitely struggled along the way, but I learned a lot getting there and I hope you enjoy.

such a beautiful intergalactic spaghetti-western showdown!
giphy didn't do us any justice when i searched "intergalactic showdown" but oh well:

Pensive, yet sure-footed AF, amazing work: absolutely and thoroughly convincing AF in ts every moment. heart

Very cool! Suspensful and surprising indeed!

Haha great GIF. Conveys how I felt writing it for sure. ("Spaghetti western! In space? Wait, what is this? Hold on, does this even work? Maybe. Yes? Hmmm...") I'm glad you liked it. I'm excited to hear what you've been working on this week. I've gone back and listened to a number of your submissions multiple times. Very inspiring work for sure heart

Thank you so much. I really respect the work you've put out here so it means a lot to me. I think you were the first person on WB I came across where I heard one track and immediately went to listen through every submission for the year. I was a bit nervous putting this one together because I've only recently picked up guitar and this the first piece I recorded trying to incorporate it. The guitar on this needed to be very present and the Telecaster in particular really does not want to help out concealing any mistakes or timidness. Very happy to hear that the pure terror I felt performing it didn't come through in the recording XD

That was good! I loved the western guitar in the beginning, and I like that you took an unexpected turn after that part. Returning to the western sound but with some darker sounding stuff underneath was a nice move. Really enjoyed this one.

Thanks! The ending was the section I struggled with the most. I had a really hard time figuring out how to make it work. It was deleted and completely rewritten at least a few times, so I'm very relieved to hear it worked for you heart (Also, apologies... I accidentally removed your comment trying to remove my own to fix something)

That's crazy kind of you to say, and it means a lot. Thank you for saying that. heart

I want to stress that I felt (and still feel) bad & insecure about every track I've submitted here. I'm new to WB but I've been making music for a while now and that's kind of how it is for me. (That's also why I don't write much more than an instrument list.) An old music teacher told me "nobody hears how much you practice." That sentence changed its meaning a lot for me depending on the kind of music I worked on, but the value of its contradiction of common sense remained. So while there's undeniable proportionality between effort and quality, every musician I know has a story of "I played a wrong note and that ended up being the right note" or "yeah, that's not intentional, just happened, and was cool."

I think the playing is convincing, yet I think the writing and form is more important here: there's not a moment wasted, and that's never, ever trivial. The word "convincing" is my favorite word w/ music because it's just as useful for odd and noisy music as it can be for pretty music that doesn't sound cheesy. So yeah, I meant it -- this is awesome, and I'm excited to be following your work this year.

Dusty and intense, amazing work

This is great, definitely achieved the goal of creating a scene and imagery while listening, such a nice blend of sounds, on their own wouldn't have thought they would work together, but these mesh so well.

Oh such a nice guitar sound - like one of those danelectro baritones. That takes us straight to western universe indeed. I love the mix of instruments there, this is really subtle and beautifully executed. And it sounds like you have the strong pad in the background that gives more body to the track, adding an eerie feeling to the piece. A lot of tension and mystery. Very very nice track, looking forward to hearing more from you in the coming weeks!

This is very solid, enjoyed it a lot. Those pads are massive and so right in this context.

Yessssss! Awesome vibe and textures

Oh and no need to feel insecure... this is great, and all your stuff is by the way!
