arrested decay

Struggled a bit getting things going on this one. Spent a lot of time working out the initial sound design and idea and was having trouble getting it somewhere I was happy with. Almost abandoned it completely a couple times but I'm trying to make a point of finishing anything I spend more than a couple hours on for the WB pieces.

Once I stopped obsessing over the initial part of the process and just laid down tracks, things started falling into place and a path towards working it into something I'm happy with became a lot clearer. Overall, I like how this turned out and I'm glad I didn't give up on it.

I suppose I'm mostly using WB as a platform for regular practice and improvement. Something I try to stay conscious of is that effective practice should always contain some feeling of struggle. If the practice feels easy, then I'm not pushing myself enough to improve. So, in that regard, this week was a success.

Looking forward to exploring another week of everyone's submissions heart

I really like the amount of space in this one, let’s all the details speak very clearly. So dark. Super cool!
Can really relate to keeping up the work on something for WB even if you’re not feeling it 100%. it’s really nice have this deadline, would probably have abandoned everything so far if it hadn’t been there…
Great work, keep pushing!

Thanks for pushing through the ugly stage - This is such a strong soundscape.

This came on and freaked me out! Feels like I'm the first to enter a nuclear power plant after a mysterious accident opened a gate to another dimension.

There's a feeling of desolation to this, but also an industrial/sci-fi feel.  I'm getting a mental image of the aftermath of the robot wars.

Wow!! The first sound is just… big! Great sound design throughout the whole track!!

WHOA. was that a guitar, or something else making the clanging noise. this is really engaging, but like... kinda scary. glad you stuck with it

Alright, this is definitely one of those "how do you even make that sound?" tracks haha. This is impressively gnarly. Way to struggle through, a great reminder to trust the process and keep trucking.

i love that upper layer of modulations! it's like this track has an architectured horizon to it: there's the rolling waves of bass, the steel edifices of guitar distortion, and then the stratosphere filled with crackly sparking electrical modulations... all of this stretches nicely across the mix big_smile
you created the most graphic and vivid audio landscape i've ever heard! heart

You are killing it, keep em coming!

Thanks Suhpos! That deadline is definitely a big help. I figure if one reason I'm here is to get better at finishing tracks, if i start it, I should finish it. Better to have a hard drive full of finished pieces where I may only like a handful than a drive full of unfinished music that I'll never come back to.

Thanks smile Certainly didn't want to freak anyone out haha but I'm happy it was so effective and evocative for you.

Thanks! It always feels like I'm doing something right if I can manage to spark someones visual imagination with sounds. Really happy this was effective in that way for you.

Thanks! There is a single track of some improvised guitar chord stabs and volume swells panned slightly to the right. Everything else is just synths and effects. Really happy you found it so engaging!

Thanks Cursory! I definitely spend the vast majority of time working on sound design, so glad to hear you like the sounds smile Exploring and discovering sounds that I connect with is the part I enjoy the most and the thing I love most about working with synths in general. A lot of times, most of my process ends up feeling more like sculpting than composing. A big part of WB for me is to give motivation to the idea of "Hey, you spent all day twiddling knobs to find cool sounds. Now DO something with them!" smile
