You've Come A Long Way, Weekly

By Tweaklab on April 1, 2018 11:44 pm

So when I found out this week marked the 20th anniversary of the Fatboy Slim album "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" I knew I had to take inspiration from that era for this week's beat.

Norman Cook was my idol when I started learning to make beats way back in the early 2000s. All these years later and I feel like I've got a general grasp on how he made those wicked big beats back in the day. This tune was only started 12 hours ago and here in Australia that means I've been asleep for at least half of them lol.

I recorded the guitar myself, I duplicated the guitar track and applied filters to achieve the bassline, a trick I believe was used back in the days of Big Beat to achieve the bassline from a sampled loop.

Lots of 303 modulation as it should be. It's probably got a bit more of a Chemical Brothers vibe on that note, but overall I feel I achieved what I set out to do in the little time I had this week!

The drum loops came from Norman Cook's very own Reason Refill "Skip To My Loops" which was one of the first if not THE first sample pack I ever grabbed back in 2003.

Oh and check out that sub bass boom drop I crafted from a flat note!

Tight and album-worthy! Really good guitar work.

Nice and gritty.

Oh man, I can't tell you the hours I spent in my room dancing to "Better Living Through Chemistry" by myself!  That and Chemical Brothers "Dig Your Own Hole" back to back.  Good times.

You've really captured so much of the tricks and tropes of the era.  The filtered bass, the breakbeat, the gigantic jungle drop, squelched out leads, super metal guitar - This is fantastic!!

Additionally, if you've never heard this song, I recommend it to you:

Oh you guys are the best. Thanks heaps for the positive feedback! I've been thinking for years now it'd be awesome to just make an entire EP/album as a love letter to 90s Big Beat and Acid House. If anyone is up to making it a collab compilation that'd be absolutely mental.

Really appreciate it, this definitely won't be the last tune like it.

This track made me remember how much I liked big beat back then, and made me realize how much I still like it!
Love this!
