Goyder's Line And A Shadow Passing

By Tristan Louth-Robins on April 25, 2014 6:54 am

This week I wanted to explore the Vocoder of the Microkorg and try out some things with the carrier and modulation inputs. I decided to set up two pure waves in Max/MSP (one as the carrier, the other as the modulator) which would gradually rise in frequency over a duration of around three minutes. The Korg's oscillator was then set up with the filters, LFO (rates and depth) and Formant set at relatively discrete levels. Since these are sine waves being used to drive the carrier and modulator, the overall effect is very subtle* but it does appear to develop over three minutes before the vocoder tone is disabled and just the two pure waves remain.

*At least I *think* this is the reason why the effect is so subtle. I haven't really used vocoders that much in the past and I'm using this piece as way of understanding the process better.

Very enjoyable bit of minimalism.  Beauty in subtlety.

The way I understand vocoders, the modulator imposes it's harmonic characteristics onto the carrier (most commonly, speech on a melody line); so if both are sine waves, wouldn't that just result in... a sine wave?

Still a good piece.

Thanks, yeah I think you exactly right there! Next time I think I'll use a couple of sawtooth waves instead. wink

Minimal beauty, I really like the purity of this track. Or maybe I just enjoy sine waves smile

.....Sines....

Lovely drone and slowly morphing development!
