Mystery and Madness

By Tone Matrix on July 21, 2024 3:58 pm

This week I stumbled upon a series of channels that extensively go over certain rock/pop songs.
When I saw one of my fav radiohead songs there I had to click and give it a looksie.
Analysing Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android”

After noodling around with the chords for funsies I then had a tiny idea to try and use just the different key change sections as inspiration for this week’s track. So for example the verses were in the key of G minor.. then the second section changes to A minor and the third section to C minor.  I tried those three keys as a chord progression instead and that got me something slightly different than my usual.

I highly recommend checking out the video above if you’re a fan of music theory/chord breakdowns of songs.  David Bennett who did this video also collaborated with the channel ProduceLikeAPro and they have an even more detailed version.  David’s is roughly 11mins long while ProduceLikeAPro has an hour long video explaining basically every section, effects use, and even including the guitar solos.

In other news.  I just saw that one of my fav childhood movies was released in 4K a few days ago.

Beautiful. No words really, this is just wonderful.

Also I remember that movie. And I remember 1986.

Also Pyramid Song. While we are talking favs.

Thank you for this heart

Love this! So beautiful. Radiohead inspired for sure

Breathtaking as usual (sounds like a fun way to compose, too)

i've always had a soft spot for 1986 too.

the melodic nods to Radiohead are so tasty. i love most eras, but yeah... OK Computer is the highwater mark in my heart.

this track has a levity that feels so appropriate right now. unwinds like an excellent short story. thank you heart

This is excellent. Soft and beautiful. I for sure hear the Radiohead inspirations.
Pyramid Song is one of my all time favs.

I love me some nice quiet piano, this is great!!!!

Also, I too am partial to 1986. I might be a bit biased, though, since that's when I came into existence, hahahahaha...

Definitely has Radiohead vibes, but with your own twist on it.  A soothing if somewhat somber listen.  I have fond memories of 1986 as well.  Most of the 80's were a pretty good time to be a kid, and '86 definitely lands in a sweet spot for me, too.

I was 5 in 1986... I don't remember that life was as complicated smile.

Love your pianos again! It does give me some Yann Tiersen "le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulin" soundtrack vibes. I recommend it to you (and the movie too if you didn't see it yet).

Take care!

Great track, contemplative and gets you in that reflective mood, thinking about the past now and those good days of the 80’s.  Definite highlight was the toy at the bottom of the cereal box or how pop tarts were part of a complete breakfast.

This is lovely, wonderful performance. Beautiful voicing and structure, with a haunting, maudlin feel. And yeah, that’s a great progression.

I need to check out that YouTube channel, getting some inspiration to break out if structural ruts sounds mega helpful.

Also, agreed - 1986 was a good year.

I wish I had more knowledge about music theory. So interesting what you compose. Everything makes sense. I love Radiohead, but it was always a mystery to me, what they were doing.
I was 18 years old in 1986, had my childhood in the 70ies. That was fun too.

Like Jegasus, I was also too busy being born that year to remember it tongue

I absolutely love videos like this, they instantly open my eyes to some new music theory that I can implement and improve my music with right away. Thank you for sharing! And this track is absolutely beautiful, the key changes create a strong narrative feel that could work for the opening of a movie or video game easily.

Also, favs: How to Disappear Completely, Idioteque and Motion Picture Soundtrack. I love everything Radiohead, but Kid A really does it for me.

pretty fancy finger work wizard - lovely piece!

Another beautiful piece, left me feeling rather introspective.

I was once recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada, I'll have to tell you about it some day.

Great pace and movement to this one. Lovely composition. I can definitely hear the key changes but they're so smooth and fitting... really nice

Beauty and sadness, all in one song
- Ebrit

Graceful like a swan settling into the water.  It's both melancholic and uplifting at the same time. The rhythmic chord playing in the right hand provides a gentle energy that progresses and builds before returning to the original progression on the outro.  Beautifully played.

Awesome to listen to as usual. I love how this came about. I have been thinking about trying to use chords from songs I like too. Paranoid Android, so good, all Radiohead yesss. 1986 was a good one. Time machine time. This song the soundtrack was we deeply reflect on our experience, the good the bad of it all.

I'm definitely feeling those Radiohead vibes, also a bit of Steven Wilson (who is also influenced by Radiohead). I tend to oversaturate my music with reverb as an aesthetic choice so it stands out to me when, on songs like this, your piano is relatively dry (by comparison) and how wonderful it sounds. Definitely a track that may inspire me to dial back my reverb a bit, haha.

Definitely +1 for all of the comments re: nailing the moody Radiohead piano vibes here. heart Now all it needs is Thom Yorke.

...Wait, let me try that again. *clears throat*
