My Soul Is So Afraid To Realize

By Tone Matrix on October 20, 2024 4:16 pm

Hello frainds,
I've been trying to combat the creaky, achey, breakiness that is my body the past few weeks.  Sitting at my desk (where I work on music) has apparently been taking it's toll on me.  Afibs and chest oddness o'plenty.  For the past 5 weeks I've been walking and doing a mini stretch routine at the local park.  Something to get me out of the house and breathing some fraish air and out of my dungeon.  Unfortunately it hasn't made a difference yet other than a bit of those positive endorphins from getting out.  So my stubborn ace finally made another appointment to see the whitecoats this Friday.  **fingers/toes criss-crossed** smile

So since I've been avoiding my throne of slouch that meant I put off everything til Saturday evening.  I remembered way back in Week 34 (before I took a left turn at Albuquerque and ended up in space for about 6 weeks) that I had a sorta droney/ambient loop sitting in that folder.  Two big pads are from Spitfire's 'Albion One' library.  The drums are from Butch Vig's drum library.  So a few filter applications and rearrangings led to me doing one take of rhodesy epiano over top.  A tiny jam with Week 34 me. tongue

If I were to pick my nits, I'd say I tried to make this session as quick as possible. I did not dedicate any time to the mix, eq, vol etc.  But all in all I'm happy with at least finding a lil niche for this previously unused progression. Where did this year go? 10 more!? yikes
**straps in, goggles down, mouth-piece bit**
GO!!

ps.  I hope you are well and look forward to this final fall run with yewz all. heart

Great track, were you granulating the piano at the beginning?  It sounded really cool and set a great mood for the rest of the piece.  I got really strong 70's Wakeman vibe (Journey to the Centre of the Earth style) which seems a wonderful fit.  Good luck for Friday dude, my thoughts are with you

Hope they don’t give you a surprise prostate exam! Good luck

Lovely track. I would’ve guessed you mixed and EQ’d this track, it all gels together well. I remember Four Tet once saying that his trick for mixing is to not EQ and I’ve subconsciously adapted to that a little bit the last couple years, it certainly works for this jam.

Very nice e-pianos, I love the big drums way further in the mix. Very nice ambiance.

Ambient drones, fat drums combined with bluesy Rhodesnoodles, suites you as well. Especially the Phil Collins tribute drumbreaks are surprisingly effective. Thank you and good luck.

Creates a nice atmosphere and some of the piano runs almost border on a funky sound.  But there's also a cool spacey ambience to it as well.  Hope you get some good news from the doctor.  Also it's truly hard to believe we're on the home stretch already.  This year has absolutely flown by.

Fingers crossed for you - hope you feel better soon. And geez, you're right, it's just ten weeks to go already. Time sure flies. Great track this week despite everything you had to power through - your ambient works are magic. big_smile

Hope the doctors are able to help you. I'm struggling with a frozen shoulder myself, so I can relate to the frustrations and pain of a failing body.

Moody track, but there's life in it. That "in the air tonight" tom fill was so fun to hear here.

take care of yourself, there seems to be something in the air. Love the Rhodes, the drums sit well in the back and let the keys sing through!

This is beautiful. Hope you get well soon! A good physical routine away from the desk is key

Man, I love me some tinesy e-piano... and honestly this fits in the mix pretty well.  And the arrangement is great... love those Phil Colinsy drum fills.... oh and the ending.  (´∀`)♡... just lovely.

Really cool texture and pad ambience, piano is sweet. Go past Tone. I love digging from past tracks, many of them want to be loved again. That's like a phil collins in the air drum fill, yessss! Sure could imagine some mix changes but this is really tasty.
Sorry you not feeling well tho, ugh, that sounds not fun. Hope appts are good. Stretching in park seems like good use of time tho.
Also strapped in here, ready for the final 10 run, and also happy to be in it with everyone!

I hope you appointment with the docs goes well. It's so damn hard to make a habit of any kind of physical activity. I'm very guilty of it and missed basically the entire summer.
I love these huge lush pads and that electric piano. Great vibes.

Great rescue of a previous idea, glad those pads did not go to waste, I really like how the epiano is the star here, but has those pads and drums just lurking in the background to keep things steady, this sounds great on headphones, would not have guessed there was no mixing done to it.  Keep going for those walks, getting outside and moving will always provide some benefit.

The sound bed, the pads are always beautiful, but with so much of your music, this piece included, it's the e-piano and improvisation that brings the mood and identity and uniqueness to the work. Really beautiful. I love the filtered drums too - especially the slow fade in which is so intensely powerful. I'm conflicted as to whether I wanted them to have an unfiltered moment - it would have been a statement, a brief shift - but there's also something powerful in keeping them locked down throughout. Great piece.

that ambient loop is so cool. A great base to apply some piano noodles on top of. Also dig the phil collins in the air tonight drum beginning. Which, fun fact, I learned that there are no cymbals on that album because he didn't want them. I'll echo JWH's tasty e-piano comment. Nice work, sorry to hear your body does not like you making music for us.

This is so pretty!!!!! The piano is indeed oh so tasty here.
Also, was that the drum break from "in the air tonight"??? Hahahaha... Amazing!
Wishing you feel better soon, too!!!

Really dig the drum groove and pads, and of course your piano playing over it all smile Also yesss the Collins drum break haha.

wow this time travel track is incredible - i like how the drums are in the mix - piano tones all sound great

be well!

Really like how the distant muted drums in the beginning come to life around 1:24 as the song develops into some sweet EP riffs layered with ambient pads before the drums take their exit at 3:10 and it evolves into such a tender and sweet EP outro. I’m really loving your synth sessions as I catch up on what I missed working my way backward.
