Lullaby for One and Zero

By Tone Matrix on May 26, 2024 6:48 pm

I had the chord structure for this done early in the week.  I tried adding some mellow percussion with some underlying pads and the main piano.  The more I worked on it the more I very much disliked it.  Tossed that in the meh pile and started working on a Tori Amos inspired loud piano track that def had me inspired.  I had a structure for that but couldn't perform it the way I wanted to.  Or at least in one complete take like I've been doing recently.  Unfortunately I've been having trouble getting the ideas to come out my fingers and cooperate with the clunky keybed of the Roland.  It's always been kind of clunky.  I think that's why it was at a huge reduced price when I bought it used from the store almost 20 years ago.  But I'm in love with it's piano sooo I dunno how I'm going to replace it.  It's heavy and big and quite the space waster for one sound.. Just sometimes when I want to do those low note rumbles ala Tori it doesn't respond the way I'm hoping with the keyaction.  Or maybe I'm just not skilled enough to wrangle the reaction time of it.  Sooo I told the hands to hit the showers and picked the first idea off the meh pile again.  Slapped some effects and digitalism on it and bippity boppity boo that's what i did done do.  *shrug*  mayhaps the Roland and I will have a talk and get on the same page next week.  This rant might be longer than the track yikes  tanks for stoppin by and listenin heart

Looks like my original comment got eaten by the void. To reiterate: I love the textural and timbral details in this piece. It’s got a real precious, tearful quality that brings me back to the cool greyweather days I spent walking in the woods and wetlands as a kid.

This is one of my favorite things I’ve heard in a while. heart Thanks for sharing!

I like this track, particularly all the little mechanical noises bouncing around the stereo field, adds a lot of movement to the track.  I'm curious what kind of Roland your working with?

Nice, sounding good for a 2nd choice track.  Always a fan of your piano production.

Gotta respect that you hold off on stuff until you can record it well, rather than what I do which is play it really shittily, then quantize it, then humanize it.

so beautiful. it is minimal but yet densely packed with atmosphere.

Once again, a beautiful piece of music.  There are echoes of the track that closes the film Inception, maybe in how it makes me feel.  Hopeful but with a looming uncertainty.  The textures made such a great accompaniment.

I agree the background sounds are subtle but add a really nice touch to the always wonderful piano playing.

This sounds sooooo pretty!!! Like I've said before, I'm a huge sucker for piano music like this.
Also, I really REALLY like the human touch of hearing the keys actually strike the wood beneath it on some key strokes. Kind of like the sound of someone's fingers sliding across the neck of a guitar while holding down a string has this very particular little screech. It just gives it an awesome human touch, which I really like.

And the piece itself is just beautiful.

Also, sorry you had a falling out with your Roland. Maybe you two can talk things over throughout this coming week, hahaha...

Wonderful addition of effects and atmosphere. I am very happy with the results. Good job, sorry to hear, you  had a hard week.

oh yes, this 100% ^
Excellent work, Tone Matrix! Even when you have to change plans you still deliver the goods heart

Sooo sooothing.  The expansiveness of this with its subtle mechanical noises is reminiscent of the Jónsi soundtrack from We Bought a Zoo.  Beautiful creation and well played.

This one goes straight to the favorites. The sound design here is fantastic, subtle and pretty. The melody is important but the playing itself is what conveys a sense of fragility. i was holding my breath, for the fear of disrupting the sound and interrupting the magic moment that was happening, as if we're witness to a unique moment. Thank you for this one!

pretty awesome example of a sprinkling of your bibbity, bobbity, and boo I have to say.

so lovely! heart

This track is exactly twice as long as the rant.
It's very lovely, maybe you're just sick of hearing it at the time? I'm enjoying this immensely.

sounds good! lovely tune smile

ooooooh better look out Roland... wizard's gonna cast a spell on you!

this is beautiful

Yup sometimes have to just scrap it and start over.  I also have a "started beats folder", that one can come in handy to find something.  In the end this was very pleasant, just listened to it twice in a row, great morning music for a grey day (hopefully the sun will still come out).
