Eagle Eye

By Tone Matrix on August 2, 2020 3:54 am

I actually finished this week's track on a Saturday for a change.  I blame Hurricane Isaias for that.  It doesn't look like Miami (where I be) will get hit.  Just some gusty wind and rain.  But hey it made me hustle this week (sorta).  This track started out by accident when I decided I had been neglecting my Bass Station 2 lately.  I was all geared up to work on some sound design for fun and make a weird noise track.  That idea lasted for about 5 minutes as I stumbled upon this lovely paraphonic patch that was released when Novation updated the Bass Station with paraphonic mode.  It had such a nice warm sound it made me think of Alessandro Cortini's (Former NIN keyboardist) ambient music.  Whom I definitely recommend.   I originally thought maybe I'd just stick with that sound but I added a few percussion loops and some pads (from Helm & Stratus) to fill it out a bit.  I probably could have added another section but I was a lil more concerned with finishing this early just in case I had to hunker down Sunday during the storm as it scoots by us.  Hooray Hurricane Preparedness!

EDIT:  If you're listening in MONO, I apologize (see comment below... below below)
DOUBLE EDIT:  So it's almost 3am and I couldn't go to bed knowing I did something so silly.  Here's the 'no freq shift version'.  Welp!  I'd always hear in mix courses "Don't forget to check it in mono"  ME: "Cool" then proceeds to never check.
Welp!  I learned my lesson mix gods!  (hopefully i post the soundcloud link correctly)

The panning on this is really cool.  Makes for an excellent listen with headphones.  It really is a nice warm sound.  It's definitely ear candy.  I like the intensity just before the release at the end.

Wonderfully subtle but evocative at the same time. Have to echo CosmicCairns, too; the ending is great.

Glad to hear you wont be getting full on hurricaned dude, thats always good news.  My girlfriend and I started looking for houses in the Caribbean this week (because fuck America now a days) and the hurricane factor is the one thing thats got us nervous.

You're right on that paraphonic patch dude, super intense and fat sound to it. Love the drums on this too and all the little volume/EQ swells going on in the background.  Super subtle but really cool.  I'm also liking the little motive/riff that pops up at around 1:00 and keeps getting more prevalent.  Really helps build tension.

Also, where do you get your artwork from?  Do you paint too?

Thanks guys!  I just realized though that I got a lil happy with the frequency shifter effect in Ableton.  For some reason I thought it sounded fine but of course I didn't check the final mix in mono.  Then when I checked it out wayyyy later on my IG post I noticed the BS2 was sorta disappearing.  I stupidly thought I had it on such a low setting that it wouldn't do that.  So on a stereo or headphones I think it sounds ok?  But in mono, not so much.   I stupidly applied that same freq shifter to one of the pads and the other higher pitched synth that repeats.  Ugh I hope it sounds ok in stereo.   I guess I need to do another mix with the freq shifters OFF or figure out how to make it have that cool wavering effect without it phasing.  DOH! *facepalm*

Oh and to answer your question, nawww I can't paint one bit.  I just decided to take a picture of an eagle eye, threw it in an app called CIRCULAR, mashed my fingers at the sliders then threw that at another app called OILIST and applied a filter to give it that painted look.  So in a way I made it but yeah there's no canvas and brush over here smile

Couldn't sleep... took out the frequency shifters and got rid of the phase issue (i hope!?)  see SC link above.  Ok I think I can attempt sleep now.

I love Alessandro Cortini's stuff! Such a tasty talented and yet down to earth guy!

This is coooool! I love your descending synth line. The sounds you're getting are smooth, moog like. There are lot of very subtle textures you're doing there. This is tasty, this is inspiring. I loved this experience.

Strong synth sound. Leads the song. The ending is a great finish. The heavy sound dying down to the note that rings out. Great track. Reminds me of the tracks from Mass Effect that I loved.

This is so nice. I love the build up like rolling clouds/waves. This is reigniting my Bass Station lust big_smile

Can definitely hear the Cortini influence in this, great find with the patch, has such a warm and deep sound, like the percussion, almost has a "modular" sound to it, maybe because I'm now thinking about Cortini, in any case sounds great!

I'll be sure to only listen to this in stereo, because the shifts are kinda neat.

love the stereo effect. It sucked me into the monitor speakers. A great trip.

really cool piece

Like I'm rising up into the sky, looking at the approaching hurricane. Glad it will miss Miami. This is BIG big sound. Listening the soundcloud version, sound good. Now I'm worried I rarely listen to stuff in mono! Great piece, nice to hear the bass station.

Very ominous sounding track this week! Love that fat bass sound. Something about this makes me think of the film 28 Days Later. The beat is relentless and there is something menacing afoot. Really like it! Would definitely make good soundtrack theme for a film.

makes me feel like I'm in a stealth adventure, sneaking into military bases and whatnot...
