Apprehensia

By Tone Matrix on April 3, 2022 12:27 pm

So this week I bet on my procrastination.  Each day passed and I said "nah tomorrow".  Saturday night rolled around and I seriously did not want to plunk away at all.  So I stubbornly worked on something by trying to just make a simple chord progression for one pad sound.  Most of the time I dislike how slow my tracks turn out.  I'm just a bit jealous of all the cool fast paced bpm tracks out there.  But I accidentally slowed this one down even more when I mistyped the bpm.  Hit play and then the bass/drums of the track just felt better (darker) to me.  It was a nice lil 'aha' moment because I was seriously about to just release a 60 sec blurb with one pad and nothing else.  Course had I started this much earlier in the week mayhaps there would be a bit more ear candy in this but que sera smile  tanks for listenin'

Yes the drums just work well, I love slow beats, used to look over them, but they give you so much space to think and feel, wander in and out. Good experimenting

The slower pace is effective on this and I like the way it takes its time to unwind.  It feels like you can settle in and go for a ride.

i agree with gesceap - the space to think is pleasant - i love the artwork with this - do you make the art pieces every week?

Hey Tone Matrix! It's been a while! This sounds great. I can appreciate the slow meditative tempo. And that bass does sound great. I really like the painting too

Tanks errrbody!  I really appreciate your kind comments and listening. Howdy cfurrow! Long time indeed! I need to catch up on your tracks.

The artwork isn't me actually painting sadly.  I wiiiiiish.  I took acrylics after school in elementary if that counts lol.  But what I do is usually find a picture I've taken and then throw it in a few iPhone apps I rotate between.  This was actually a picture of me staring at my sneakers in the green grass.  The (free, i think) app "Oilist" is excellent for this type of stuff.  You can make it super abstract or less and it also paints it before your eyes in this cool animation.  It starts out on a blank canvas and splashes it on.  So as it's animated you have the option to hit a plus sign and snap pics as it goes.  Rather than show my stubby legs on grass I went for the super abstract version.  It also has variations on how it paints.
Maybe I should have just said,  "Yes. Yes I paint da pictchurez."  tongue lol
But I do enjoy working on these lil pics.  It's usually right after I export the final mp3 of the track.  So it's a celebratory yay I'm done cathartic feeling smile
Thanks for reading my babbling brook.  Here's to the next quarter being as fun and supportive!

Oh and last week's was a picture of Taylor Hawkins.  So it def has a super abstract setting when you catch it early.  Tons of different more extreme filters too.  With names like "Monet Ponds, Cezanne Afternoon, Van Gogh Passion".  And nope I do not work for them lol.  I just really enjoy this app because its fast and simple and makes pwitty colors.  The album cover for my new album was done with this app.  A simple picture of the bottle brush tree outside my window smile  Ok caffeinated me out!

I love this track. The tempo is agreeable to my taste. The the song develops slowly and seems to crack up a little in the end, which is delicate.

Yeah. I understand this all too well but sometimes I feel the quality of the song has nothing to do with time spent: I enjoyed your song thoroughly.

loving the slow speed.  more of these accidents please!

not yet!  i'm trying to get a dozen done and then maybe host a show + art auction!

I like the slow beat here. It's 3am, waiting at the cafe for the space shuttle in 2154. I love it, but I am biased by my absolute love for arps and synthwave vibe.

well it does not work, sorry for the spam with non working syntwave gifs smile

I really like the atmosphere of this one. The slow intensity is great and the choice of synths is super pleasing. Great music for thinking

Love this! Can't imagine it at a different pacing.  Getting a darker shade of Tangerine Dream kind of vibe.  The hat lead up to clap combo creates anticipation.  Really nice!

I'm always all about the slow tempos, i'll often make something then slow it down and find the drums now have more effect, can hear the full delay/reverb on the hihats and snare.  This has a very nighttime feel to me, nice to listen while driving in the dark.

the texture here is very nice and moody, very fortunate tempo accident

Nice that you stumbled upon this, that bass is really, really good here

I dig slower tempos because as you noticed, it can create a darker vibe.  I quite like the groove of slower tracks too so definitely a nice stumble there.  There's a good chunk of broodiness hidden in your track which is cool.  There's quite a bit of noise floor in this track it seems?  I thought it may be intentional to start with as I do like some noise but it stayed the same throughout.

Thanks for the kind comments.  Yeah I def think I overdid it with the noise.  I was trying to go for that oversaturated tape feel and my fatigued ears most likely did not realize how loud it is.  I haven't been consistent with this effect in my other tracks either so hopefully it's not as noticeable.  I'll keep it in mind for the next one smile
