A Boat Beneath A Starry Sky

By Tone Matrix on February 26, 2022 2:14 pm

Trying to stick with the positive feedback and comments to push me through each week.  I definitely have not found my groove Stella!  It's part lazy part blah each week it seems.  I know it's only week 8 so maybe by week eleventy I'll feel better about my output.  Meh it's at least a somber lil noodle to float away to... I think.  The synths I believe shall come out to play more next week.  Le piano skillz are not what they used to be.  Tanks for listenin!

Well, I enjoy hearing your noodles.  They're effective at creating a mood and this one was somber yet still somehow kind of uplifting to me.

Tanks for sharing! Cheers to week eleventy. I'm feeling drained from life, but I try to remember the positive, as you do with the comments and feedback. I'm glad I get to work on something I love and even moreso that I have others who will listen to it and share their time listening. The thoughts they share is yet another thing I'm grateful for. Thanks for being one of those people who shares both. This track is wonderful. Not your best piano playing? Meh. It's pretty durn nice as it is. A fitting musical representation of a boat drifting by underneath a darkened sky. big_smile

I second this. It's a tranquil track with a bit of wonder that raises the spirits.

I am always looking forward to hear your newest releases every week. This one is a delightful example of your cookings. very graceful.

You do such beautiful piano things! Thank you!

Always happy for one of your track. Gorgeous sound on this piano. I love what you did to the melody around 1:16, there was some additional tension there that really caught my ear. Please keep them coming!

your title reminded me of a song lyric i like from a song i haven't heard in quite some time
you shook something loose in the ole synapses...
"all i ask for is love and a star to steer us by"
hoping you feel your grove back by eleventy

I love the title. I imagined being on that boat, it was very pleasant experience. Your noodles are always excellent, chord choices and playing always sounds great! A toast to another week ... and looking forward to eleventy!

I think week eleventy is a good goal, and I'm sure I'll set that for myself soon enough. I really like the way this track feels like a self-contained journey. I'm probably being influenced a lot by the title, but it's nice imagery and a great soundtrack for it, too.

This is so beautiful~

Love the atmosphere on this one.  The minimalist piano accompanied by the subtle haunting synths in the background is great.  That little bridge around 1:10 is awesome too, love what you did harmonically there.

I like the subtle synth work under the piano and the reverb creates a brooding atmosphere.

I love what you do with the piano, this is so enjoyable, love the synth outro, I know I’ve said it many times but definitely feeling the NIN vibe on this one

Ah, the ol piano chestnut.  Hehe.

It does sound lovely and the progression works with the pace. An added tension here or there too which is cool.  What piano vst are you using?

when are people going to get their act together and let you score a film?  the song practically edits the movie for you!

incredible.

Thanks so much everyone for these wonderful supportive comments.
rdomain the piano is from my old clunky Roland RD700 GX.  It's a digital stage piano that I got back in '07.  Being the Reznor freak I am, I had seen him using it on his tour for his shows.  Sure enough a lot of the piano tracks he did during that time had that same sort of sound.  Well at least when he played live.  I got it used for under a 1K but I think I'm finally realizing its cuz the keybed is a bit off.  But the sounds on it are just awesome.  Tons of acoustic instruments that have a nice authentic feel to them.  This was before I had access to Spitfire and Kontakt like libraries.  A bunch of Rhodes EPs too that I need to use more actually.  Thank you for reading this long winded answer smile

It's kinda funny how my mindset was when I wrote the description to this track. Two days later after I sat down at the Roland and I guess I was feeling good because somehow I improvised 4 new tracks one after the other.  Thank goodness for Ableton's Capture mode too.  Because I never actually hit the record button.  When I hit record I tend to get that "stay on the grid feeling".  Also there are mistakes here and there in the album but just the free flowing of melody and feeling happy with it is what finally made me feel good.  Yay! smile

Also, Mr. Drank, haha I wish someone would let me score a film or just use one track for something that would be awesome.  I know for sure I can't do anything John Williams like but just something moody would be nice.  My career for scoring/soundtracks is 1.  If you ever see the indie film "An Uzi at the Alamo" one of my old much more techno-ey tracks was used for a cocky cop slo motion pull over scene.  Other than that I've been dreaming of scoring some dark noir film forevs.

Sorry for the late response, I truly appreciate each and everyone taking the time to listen and comment.  Without you peeps I'd be huddled in a corner in the dark listening to NIN on repeat and not making music tongue

Massive Reznor freak here too so I understand.  Haha.
